| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. This is from a while ago, but what an interesting dream! Reminds me a bit of the Wanderer's Library from the SCP-verse, more than the Great Library project. Last night I dreamed that scientists discovered an antelope that lived in space, just a normal antelope drifting through the void. It was currently orbiting the Earth and went by the taxonomic name Antelopus orbitos. I learned of this from a Wikipedia page about how the space antelope had been spotted from the seaside cliffs near where I live (with a blurry UFO-style photo supposedly showing it), and there were urban legends about space antelope sightings which Wikipedia users were trying to remove. Other things I've dreamed of recently: hummingbirds diving into tide pools and flying underwater, and flyingfish (looking sort of like the one on this book cover) flapping around cities like pigeons. I recently had a dream with an interesting creature. Basically, it was a far-future scenario where invertebrates were the dominant animals. I only remember two animals from that dream. One was a sapient polychaete worm that looked like a stack of rocks and a diamond shaped head. Another one was a mosquito larvae where the breathing tube turned into a mouth and the mouthparts formed legs. I will probably draw them soon. EDIT: Thanks for the like Beetleboy. Really means a lot coming from you. Edited by A small dog, May 17 2018, 08:30 AM.

Sorry to double post, but I just had another dream. It was at a zoo/aquarium/museum in a camp by where I live. Outside there were dwarf elephants. When I got inside, there was an aviary where several interesting birds flew. One was like a cross between a parrot and a hawk called a “skawk”. Another didn’t have a name but was more interesting. It superficially resembled a Kakapo but could fly, was as tall as me, and had feathers that formed “scales”. By that I don’t mean like a pangolin, but the feathers were in a scale shape. I don’t remember the others, but I get a vague feeling that they were equally interesting. Then there was a carnivorous moose chasing after an antlered squirrel. Then there was the aquarium. There were these bright yellow dolphins and something that only superficially resembled an orca with six fins. It was having its teeth cleaned. There was an underwater tunnel with a giant swimming nudibranch (3 feet long if I remember correctly), a fish that resembled a Christmas ornament, and something that I can only describe as a 3 armed starfish with a pistol shrimp claw on top of it. Then there was a “kappa” in a tank hardly big enough for it to move. Then it was on to the reptile and insect room. There were tiny reptiles that resembled Victorian Era depictions of dinosaurs and in one exhibit there was a chicken sized reptile that resembled the dilophosaurus from Jurassic park. It was running against the glass in a way I likened to “bad AI in a video game”. There were butterflies that weren’t to noteworthy and then I woke up. |

I had a dream the other night of a really weird animal. It was a bat, specifically a microbat, ironically less than an inch long. It had a long snout, and specialized in hunting the fry of small fish. Its wings are used as a net to help encapture its prey. Now for the weird part. It was found several miles underneath the oceans surface. |

Maybe a year or so ago, I had a dream where I was taking a walk in the dark until I came across two odd animals. I had just discovered a new species of rat, a male and pregnant female together finding a place to nest. The males were black, hairless, had large heads with wicked front teeth, and were covered large warts filled with semen. The females on the other hand, while also hairless, were turquoise in color, translucent, bioluminescent, and extremely stretchy. I could see the developing young inside the mother’s womb. When I got closer I startled the mother, where she then proceeded to tear herself in half, using her screaming underdeveloped young and flailing back-half as a distraction while the rest of her scurried away. The male, also startled, let out a loud human “laugh”, erupted all of his warts, and burrowed under the ground. I saw them later in the dream resting in a tree hollow, both showing no sign of physical distress, and the young still developing in the mother’s womb. Additionally in a dream I had last night, I was exploring the deep sea trenches of the pacific, casually stroling along as you do, just discovering random deep sea animals. The animals included but were not limited to; A hairy starfish that seemingly produced clouds of mayonnaise under stress. What looked like a pair of headphones covered in an exoskeleton, and propelled itself through the water with two flapping fins. Some sort of marsupial with ventral gills and a bioluminescent trunk What looked like a gangly bird made of jelly and gas bladders. A pale, sessile headless humanoid that used its overgrown phalice to catch and kill passing fish. A corkscrew shaped animal that drifted slowly through the water, with dozens of tentacles trailing behind it. Edited by Finncredibad, May 27 2018, 08:27 PM.

That is dream-weird for sure. Do you often get ideas from them? Some of those sound like interesting concepts if worked upon. I'm going to post one too. A dream I had a years back had a monster in it. Thing is, it was one of those kinds of monsters where you only vaguely remember it, no details or anything just generally "it was big, black and shiny", "sort-of arthropod-like", "had kidney-bean eyes", "had stabby things" and "had a projecting saw-tongue". Sadly whenever I tried to illustrate it it would come out looking painfully generic and didn't really capture the scariness I felt it had in the dream. It was probably just not seeing much detail of it that was scary in the first place, that and the stabbiness of it. Some kind of weaponized limbs that were quite sword-like. Because I had no concept of the creature's body plan it's movements were completely unpredictable and often seemed to come out of nowhere. Edited by SpeculativeNebula, May 29 2018, 05:25 AM.

I had a dream a while ago (I just remembered it because I made a post on it on another site) where- somehow- it had been predicted that the sun would go out like a light bulb in a week. It was all over the news. People were stocking up supplies and preparing... but no one seemed to realize that it would be a certain death sentence. Even this part of the dream The dream skipped some time forward. A few times. 1st skip: cut to view of a typical “snowball earth” from space 2nd skip: cut to view of my neighborhood. At least I assume it was my neighborhood. I could barely make out the tops of the houses out from the snowdrifts. Aside from trees barely poking out of the snow as barren twigs- there is no indication that anything ever lived here. Aside from the wind it is silent. 3rd skip: My own room. The windows are black due to the dense snow packed against them. Icicles hand from the ceiling. Every surface is coated in a glossy layer of faintly blue ice. The fish tank is frozen- the former inhabitant near the surface, frozen whilst going for a breath of air. This scene is simultaneously beautiful and disturbing for me to look at. 4th skip: this is where the dream became a nightmare. Cut to my brothers room. For context this room is downstairs and has no windows- this would make it the safest place, and in this the warmest, in the house. It’s of course all frozen too. Only there are signs of extensive preparation for the eternal, frigid twilight. The door is boarded shut. Piles of food and water stacked near the couch. The table had been disassembled to make a crude campfire- of course- This was all futile. On the couch was a number of blankets, under them, frozen corpses- me, my brother, my parents, the dogs! I woke up to find something even more frightening than that sense of impending doom I overslept quite a bit No creatures in this dream unfortunately, but I’m sure deep sea vent life would be just fine |
