| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Just wanted to remind everyone that today is the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, triggering America's entry into WWII. It was the greatest generation's darkest hour but we managed to pull through and fight back and defeat the personification of evil in Mussolini, Tojo and Hitler. By the way, did anyone else simply dislike or even liked "Pearl Harbor" (2001) by Michael Bay? I mean, it's no "Saving Private Ryan" but it was MUCH better written than "Titanic" (which is getting a 3-D re-release next year for the 15th anniversary.) What the film needs is a recut of the million feet of film shot for it; only a third was used. |

I've not seen the film, so I can't judge it. Titanic would have been much better if it has been about the RMS Lusitania. You could have the same dull story with the story of U-20 keeping it interesting for normal people. Anyway, I never really "got" the attack before I read Mission of Honor. I was not emotionally invested in the American 40's as I was with those characters and factions in the novel. Before that it was simply a rather brilliant surprise attack by Yamamoto. |

If by brilliant you mean asking fopr how long the Japs can win until the U.S. starts kicking ass, and getting the answer of '6months' and then six months later TO THE DAY getting their asses handed to them at the Battle of Midway. You don't go around pissing off a nation with the ability to produce ships faster than you can sink them. |

I have never seen the movie Pearl Harbour. I have seen Tora! Tora! Tora! from the 60s or 70s - its a brilliant movie, and shows the whole conflict from both sides... Pearl Harbour was just revenge for Admiral Perry's attack on Japan in the 1850s... Japs have long memories. More civilians were killed in the Jap bombing of Darwin than Pearl Habour (quite a few civilian deaths in Pearl Harbour were from friendly fire!). and before anyone says anything - I REFUSE to misspell "harbour"! |

No one cares because if those people in Australia weren't killed by Japs then, then they'd have been sent off to war, or continue to live in Australia. You know, where everything is trying to kill you. |

Pear Harbor wasn't a surprise attack, or at least it wasn't meant to be. There was supposed to be a declaration of war first, then an attack but the declaration got delayed en route somehow and communications with Yamamoto's fleet were impossible due to radio silence. Also I love Tora! Tora! Tora! Great movie. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Admiral Yamamoto knew it was war they could not win, and he didn't want to fight it. But he was ordered to, and it was going to happen anyway whether he liked it or not. It was supposed to be a surprise attack, they wanted to attack immediately after declaring war so that it was technically ok, but the Pacific Fleet had no time to prepare. I doubt Perry's opening of Japan had much to do with it. The USA refused to sell oil to them, which would have left them defenceless in a few years. They needed to either force America to start selling them oil again, or capture somewhere that had oil, like the Dutch East Indies. Then there was the fact the USA was supplying the Chinese with weapons. Combine that with the idea that the Emperor had a divine right to rule the whole world, general feeling Japan had snubbed by the other powers* and a wish to dominate and "liberate" Asia, and war seems like the only option. *Getting less ships in the Washington Naval Treaty than the USA or UK, the failure of the Racial Equality Proposal in the Treaty of Versailles, general Anglophone fears of Asians conquering them. Imagine if our naval carriers were there and/or it wasn't a Sunday where many were sleeping in or at church? We would have been so screwed. Anyway, speaking of imperial Japan, you guys might like to see the trailer for "The Flowers of War." It's the new film by Zhang Yimou, director of such hits like "Raise the Red Lantern," "Hero," "House of Flying Daggers," and "Curse of the Golden Flower." This time, he teams up with recent Oscar winner Christian Bale where he plays a priest who defends poor, innocent, Chinese civilians from Japanese terror during the Rape of Nanjing. Here you go: http://www.deadline.com/2011/12/hot-trailer-the-flowers-of-war-2/ China is submitting this movie for Oscar consideration and it is China's most expensive movie costing $100 mil. I don't think it would. It would have extended the war by a year or two, but for the most part I think the war would follow the same course. We might have ended up with rather nasty Hindu Nationalists taking over India, and the Soviets getting more control in Asia, but I doubt the outcome would have been the same. And the film does not really sound my cup of tea. It's bad enough knowing that happened, I don't want to see it recreated. Edited by lamna, Dec 10 2011, 02:33 AM.

I'm Australian too. But why the whole comparison of two different attacks? They're both tragedies in their own rights and it's totally insensitive to parade around a death count like it warrants more sympathy than the other. I agree on the spelling of 'harbour' though. |

Youre right, and considering what the IJA did in China, and it's insignificant anyway. |
