I saw the tripod and imagined it saying "Pssh, girl, you fine. Don't be stressin' 'bout what some man thinks. You don't have to take that, uh-uh girlfriend!"
|
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.
"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

These are by a guy on deviantART I like named Preradkor. He's under-appreciated because he hardly ever submits new artwork.
(I've copy-pasted his descriptions along with his pieces.)
Spoiler: click to toggle This autumn I have been reading "Climbing Mount Improbable". In one chapter author wondered why almost all animals are symmetrical. I begin to wonder if it is possible for absolutely asymmetrical animals to evolve somewhere in space. And I was not thinking about rare exceptions, what live also on Earth, but large group, containing very many species, which is basically asymmetrical since millions years. I decided that it must be small, fast breeding animals similar to Earth arthropods. So here you have two species of asymmetrical bugs (popularly known as askewbugs) from planet Ullr somewhere in Draco constellation. These alien "arthropods" evolved from primitive lancelet like animals. These small, worm like creatures were small, had primitive rubber like internal skeleton on their belly and swimmed like a snakes. Some of them begin to swim in open waters, strangely upside-down, like Synodontis nigriventris. This group evolved into often large, vertebrate like animals equipped with internal metallic-protein skeleton, and vertebral column in their back. Some of these primitive, upside-down swimmers returned to sea bed, but because they were side flat, they lie on the sea bed on one side, like flounders. After that, they developed strong pine cone like carbohydrate-protein shells, transformed fins into many legs, which helped them walk on the ground, and lost their internal skeleton. They become similar to earth arthropods, except lack of symmetry. Their left side is their anatomical belly, and their anatomical back is right side of back. It makes them very strange creatures. These two species are Miles richthofeni and Informiscorpio multipes. Genus Miles (knight bugs) contains large (up to 25 cm) arboreal herbivores. Male’s knight bugs first front leg is transformed into heavy weapon, similar depending on species to sword, spear, mace, pickaxe, hook or axe. They look quite fearsome and in fact their punch can be very nasty. They live in groups containing about 5 adult unarmed females, some young specimens and one adult male, what protects them from predators and chase out other males. Red color is frequent in this genus, because plants on this planet are usually red with black leaves. So sober red color makes perfect camouflage. Miles richthofeni lives in forests in equatorial area, only place on the planet, where temperature is usually higher than 0 degree Celsius. This species is one of the largest and most beautiful. Their very smooth shining carapace is quite good visible on tree branches and makes rather warning than camouflage. In fact their 23 cm long, flexer muscle filled machete can be dangerous even to bigger, vertebrate like predators. Of course its name comes from famous German WWI pilot, Manfred von Richthofen (known as Red Baron), who painted his plane in red. Informiscorpio multipes is smaller, reaching only about 5 centimeters, predatory species. Its similarity to Earth scorpion is very interesting example of convergence, but makes it looks even stranger. It also hunts like a scorpion, using venom to kill smaller asymmetrical arthropods. It's venom is harmless for human, although cause pain. This species is easily cognoscible among other scorpion like species, because it is the only, what walks on ten legs (other species walks on nine). It lives far due south on the ice savannah. Ice savannah of Ullr is always frozen. Plants grow here in ice and don't congeal because like almost all living thing on this planet have methanol diluted in every cell and body fluids. It is important accommodation on planet what is much colder than Earth. Now there is one small, not frozen ocean on this planet subequatorial area, but popularity of this apparition suggests that planet used to be even much colder than now. Probably all the water on planet was entirely frozen in even lower temperature than Earth in Cryogenian. Most asymmetric "insects" on Ullr are of course not so armed like these two species. Most of them have only tiny grab crayfish-like claw on the end of second antenna and mouthparts. Their mouthparts resembles a little Earth vertebrate jaws, because its main part is big, crayfish-like claw, used to bite, covering three mandibles under it. Most species, like arthropods on earth are also smaller, there is very many species less than one millimeter long. But that two are also not the biggest. Some deep sea species like Monstroastacus abysalis can grow to 4 meters long. Of course these creatures have neither part nor lot in with Coatlicue life forms and in fact they are even more toxic for each other than every of them for Earth animals. The reason is totally different planets they come from. For example on cold and freezed Ullr are a lot of low coagulation temperature chemical compounds in all living creatures. They are often toxic for humans, but innocuous for life on Ullr. Most creatures are very frost proof, some can behave normally with body temperature -60 degree Celsius, and very many of creatures, especially larger ones are more or less homeothermic. Their metabolism is also much slower than Earth animals and there is very little numbers flying species. Probably also there is no chance for intelligence to evolve here. In fact the smartest creatures are about as intelligent as rat (what is quite good in so bad environment) Hot, wet and stormy Coatlicue have totally different requirements. Creatures here rather try to upgrade temperature of evaporation in their body fluids and have also very unique method of protecting their genotype from thermal decomposition. Of course their genes are much more heat proof than ours, but it is still not enough for avoiding all mutation. So plant-like creatures have very many cell nucleuses in every cell (few from all of parent whose can be much more than two), and animal-like creatures are genetic chimeras. That’s mean they are made from many cell populations originated from different zygotes (up to one hundred in large cephalothoraxids). That’s mean each Coatlicue “animal” is in fact its own siblings, sometimes even different parts of one creature can have different fathers. So great quantity and variety of genes in each creature is perfect form of protecting the genes from mutations. There is very little chance that different genetics materials will break down in the same place, and so creature can try to repair. If it will be impossible, immune system can easily kill all mutated cells, precluding any cancer development without harming whole creature. This protection, simultaneously with hot temperatures allow all Coatlicue creatures to grow and breed unbelievably fast. For example one of largest Coatlicue plants, tower conemushroom can grow to 200 meters high in five Earth weeks, if it will be lucky enough to survive all hurricanes this time. I am especially proud of this drawing, because it is my first, I didn’t need to use photoshop to upgrade it. In fact I used it only to merge two pieces of paper on which these creatures were drawn and removing advertisement, what were in the corners of them. I used pencil HB, crayons and black pen only to draw pupils in eyes. It was drawn in two slips of paper, broken out from notepad.
Spoiler: click to toggle It is one of my very few civilized species projects. Creature on the picture is in human language named the Asymmetran. (Its own species name is unwritable, because Asymmetrans don’t have sound spoken language). As name suggest, Asymmetrans are not symmetrical. Their left front leg is transformed into something what can be named hand. Tentacles on their left head side are also longer and stronger. It is believed that this asymmetry is adaptation to using tools, because other, non intelligent creatures, more or less cognate to Asymmetrans are symmetrical. Asymmetrans looks a little similar to earth mites, although they are in fact really huge. Smallest races of their species weight two tons, biggest 11 tons, what is twice heavier than earth african elephant. Their form of creating civilization is very strange in humans point of view, because they are just extremely “antropophobic”. That’s mean, there is nothing more stressful for them, than meeting another Asymmetran. So they never create large society and cities. Only form of community, Asymmetrans create is something what humans used to call marriage. Asymmetrans mating is very complicated, and often ends with dead of one of unrealized lovers. If pair would match successfully, bond is imprinted so strongly in their minds, that even if one partner dies or is separated, remaining one would be never able to find another, and also wouldn’t search. Matched pair becomes very aggressive for any other Asymmetrans specimen, and meeting with such adult pair is most probable cause of death for many adolescent, searching for partner, Asymmetrans. It behavior may be compared to pair of earth hawks guarding their territory. When pair is created, female lays eggs, and hatched offspring (called infants or larvae) is feed by both parents, similar way birds do. After they reach age, they begin to walk like adult ones, their parents intensively teach them, everything they know. Youngs wouldn’t have another occasion to learn their ancestor’s knowledge, than their childhood, so it is very important stage. When they begin to mature, what happens about 30 year of life, their would not be tolerated longer by parents, and must leave family forever. It is most dangerous stage in their life, and most young Asymmetrans then dies. If young Asymmetran would successfully establish its own family, it can survive for 600 earth years, and produce up to 200 offspring, what balance their high mortality in young age. Of course such autistic form of civilization would not last long in humans, but Asymmetrans are well adapted. Their memory is just amazing. It is believed that they do not forget anything. In fact they can “tell” what happened to their ancestor ten generation away, with just photographic precision. Single young specimen is able to create spaceship, often more unfailing than most human made. It is believed (and Asymmetrans confirm it), that their species designed first long-range spaceship about 6 million years ago, and today much more Asymmetrans live in space, than on planets. (They very rarely terraforming planets, and when they do, they also live in pairs very far away from each other, so their planets are covered by jungle, spotted by rare advanced structures.) They easily think in more than three dimensions, and advanced physics laws, hard or even impossible to understand for most of humanity, for them are elemental. Reason for that is their secondary, somatic brain which weight about 20% body mass, what in larger races, can be over 2 tons. Their artifacts, if humans manage to understand its activity, can be so precious for human science, that there would be constructed fleet of human made dreadnoughts, designed only to hunt and capture Asymmetran ships. In fact capturing Asymmetran ship is not as hard as it sound, because, it has no more than two adult pilots aboard. Of course they are colossal and have armored skin, but have no chance to beat off human army, if it managed to board their ships. (Velorans can do it even better, because they live in ant like colonies. Large Veloran ships used to board army even on human biggest war spaceship for the same reason, since Veloran civilization is 3000 years younger than human one.) 6 million years of existing civilization is a very long time. Asymmetrans remember several civilizations, they watched rise and fall. They avoided self destruction mostly because their dispersion. (Only “civilization” known, older than Asymmetrans ale Etherans. They arisen under one of the first stars in universe, live on planets without atmosphere under stars type B and O. Etherans look like 200 meters high anemones, their way of thinking is not understandable for humans, and their technology is so advanced, that humans see only “magic” in it, and avoid stars system inhabited by Etherans). Asymmetran culture is very strange, because it is only sum of memories of every specimen parents. That’s mean, they have much more differential types of culture, than any other known species. It is hard to foresee behavior of Asymmetran pair, if this one was not seen before. They usually threat humans differently than other Asymmetrans, but have strong reason to hate humans (we are just another aggressive, colonial bugs). It is recommended to avoid them, if we don’t have battleship powerful enough to dictate them what to do. Of course so old and separate species must split in different races and subspecies. They are more differential than dogs. Biggest races are 5 times larger than smallest. They are usual colored like one on the picture, but, can be totally black, light blue, more than this, even entirely red, orange or yellow, green or violet. They can be more or less speckled, even totally white. Some races have different number of fingers, and body proportion can differ too. Based on creatures what live in their spaceships and planets, they inhabit (their original planet wasn’t found by humans), it is believed that their ancestors had 7 pairs of legs, and looked similar to millipedes (what is popular “animal” body shape in universe), when they walked out of water. Some pair of walking legs, transformed into tentacles, some fused, some disappear, some reduced to genitals, and Asymmetrans ended with three legs and one hand. Most “animals” from their planet, looks similar to huge crustaceans, just like Asymmetrans. Their skeleton is made from both bones and skin plates, what makes it similar to skeleton of a turtle (but with moveable shell plates). Their amour is covered by strange fur/plumage like thing, made of flat skin outgrowths similar in size and shape to willow leaves. On top of their head is turret with three stalked eyes. Have two mandibles, and one upper jaw, so their mouth opens in three directions. Holes in their head sides are nostrils. Only sound they can generate is deep rumble, what have similar meaning like human yell. Their articulated language is based on tentacle touch, so talking Asymmetrans look like communicating ants. Of course only mated pairs and their young offspring “talk” to each other. Asymmetran touch “language” is almost impossible to understand for humans, but Asymmetrans don’t seem to have a problem in using artificial sound generator to talk in understandable human language. Asymmetran has two brains. First one, located naturally in head is about size of human brain and works mostly to analyze signals from sense receptors. Second one, located in abdomen, mostly above hind legs is amazingly big and complex, weight about 20% of their colossal body mass and is used for intelligent thinking process. Velorans, and Etherans, together with Pictorans, are my other civilization projects. Velorans, civilization native to Coatlicue, are drawn slowly since 2007, and still only one caste (worker) is finished (I even played as them in spore in meantime). Pictorans, are in stage of unended pencil sketch, and Etherans since 1,5 year, when I decided to draw them, are in phase of idea, I still didn’t make even sketch. Asymmetran also spend almost a year in stage of idea, but I finally ended it this winter. It lasted another half year since I posted it on DA. Asymmetrans, I don’t know if it is visible, are based a little on Space Jockeys, from “Alien”, Prawns, from “District 9”, mantis shrimp and elephant. I don't like alien humanoid civilizations, so my are always non humanoidal.
