Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Union, Empire; same difference. "Federation" is just as bad a term too. I see why the Klingons and Cardassians and such are so weary of the Federation when I play STO. Federation space is seriously like half the goddamn galaxy, it's five times the size of the Klingon Empire and Cardassian Union combined. Hell, the Federation is so big it doesn't even all fit on the map of the Federation in the game. Giant area of influence, non-monetary based economy, free food and products for the people. The Federation is like a space USSR or something.

Oh my god, they should make the Ferengi a playable race. That would be so boss.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

I think that's my favourite part of the Federation, it's expansionist but that's not portrayed as evil.

Empire implies a centralised state, with an Emperor like the Klingons and the Romulans. Speaking of which, how is Kahless?
Federation implies a devolved structure with each member being autonomous and voluntary staying together for the common good.

Yeah, I'd like to see how Ferengi society is doing now they let women take part.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could fly a Dreadnought? Given how powerful they are I could picture the Cardassian removing the warhead and turning them into warships, given the state they were in after they turned on the Dominion.

I utterly despise the Federation with every fiber of my being. The thing I hate most about the Federation are the humans. What the hell kind of future do they live in that all human beings are perfect happy people with perfect lives and unshakable, strict moral foundations? I think that's just sickening. Humans shouldn't be happy. They shouldn't be moral. They should be ruthless and without mercy or moral constraints! Mankind should enslave and rule the galaxy with a titanium fist!

We warm ourselves by wearing the skin of slain beasts! We irradiate our atmosphere and pollute our water to weed out the weak! We nailed our most powerful god to a stick! Don't fuck with the human race! Krogan and Klingon alike should cower in fear; we're coming, and we're coming with a vengeance.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

So Star Trek Online is completely free to play now. Like completely, even the game is free. You can get it here, make an account, and get to playing! Let me just say, wow they have really updated this game. The graphics are greatly improved, I mean they are just spectacular. If you like Star Trek (not even necessarily a fan of it, just if you like it) then I would say it's worth checking out for the eye candy alone if you have a computer that can handle it. Not only that, they've revamped the ground combat. When I last played it was really awkward and more "sit there and keep clicking fire." Now they've added the ability to switch from the default RPG mode to an almost FPS shooter mode. When I first played the game, the space battles and exploration was my favorite aspect but now I adore the ground missions.

The best part about the game is that content is episodic, that is to say that every week there is a new set of storyline driven quests released. It really makes the game feel more like you're actually in Star Trek. I've also noticed they've moved away from diplomacy and puzzles (although those aspects are still in the game if you like them) and have made much of the gameplay more action oriented. Do you know what I did today? I boarded the barge of the dead and went to the Klingon afterlife to kill the Klingon version of Satan. Do you know how utterly epic Klingon Hell is? No, you don't, you have no idea. You know what I did the day before? I laid waste to the Federation shipyards at Utopia Planitia, Mars.

One interested new feature is Duty Officers; the "average joe" members of your crew. You can now send them off on assignments to get all kinds of neat rewards and make some extra cash and dilithium on the side (and if you're anything like me you'll just immediately lose it all at dabo in an attempt to make some latinum). The more assignments they complete, the more valuable they are to you. They're useful for building relationships with other players too, as they can be traded and temporarily exchanged. Start them off with something small, like escorting colonists to the imperial perimeter or selling prisoners of war to Orion slavers. Then maybe put them up to something bigger, like allowing them to regain their family's honor from a rival house or sending them off to negotiate the voluntary annexation of a minor race into the Empire.

Enough of my rambling, its totally free so you can check it out for yourselves if you'd like. I will say that Cryptic has pulled one over on the players but making lots of stuff cost "crypitc points" (which you, of course, pay real money for). Most of it is for customization though, like buying retrofitted older ships or new clothing you can use to modify your uniform. It seems like everything that's not default costs points at first, but that's just because a lot of stuff needs to be unlocked through completing missions or getting accolades (achievements) now. Anyways, if you decide to play and you're ever in First City look up Captain Gratth. I'm the 8' 4'' lizard man wearing the original series Klingon uniform standing next to the Horta hatchling.

Also it turned out paying for it in the past was a good call. I got to start playing for free a week before anyone else, I got to keep my characters and all their content (including the stuff that is now paid only or costs cryptic points), and I have a bunch of rare items that are not longer possible to get in the game.

I've been playing for a few weeks, though of course I decided to go with the government not full of paranoid idiots and old men who've forgotten what honour is. Oh and Undine, can't forget them. I'm glad to see the Klingon Empire is so inclusive these days, once jeghpu'wI' could barely leave their homeworlds, now Changelings, Undines, seems like anyone can join the government or the military.

I take it you play Federation then? I'm liking the Klingons, but the revamped the way Klingons work and now I have to do all the missions over again. I might just play my Federation character, they're about the same level now. If you want to team up for a mission sometime try to find me, I captain a galaxy class cruiser called the USS Sagan's Legacy.

Indeed I do, a Miranda class cruiser, the USS Indefatigable. I'm going to go for escorts, they have both the Defiant and the Prometheus class ships, shouldn't be too much longer now before I can start to advance.

What's a better name, Valiant or Warspite?

Warspite, there's already a Valiant I think. I also have a Defiant class escort I like to use sometimes, the USS Rhodes. I have lots of ships with my Fed character, I need to buy another Intrepid class vessel though. Not sure what happened to the USS Melancholy Hill, but she's gone now.

I was thinking of themeing my ship names, I love the "In" names Indomitable, Invincible, Inflexible.

The Intrepid class looks pretty cool, but it seems like the early tier Science vessels all look a bit off.
