In order to understand Lovecraftian organisms, you must first understand their origins. Lovecraftia is a seperate universe from our own, but "intersects" it, enabling matter and energy to slip through from one to the other on occasion. Because of this, Lovecraftian beings are only partially "real" in our universe. This seems to give them powers that we cannot understand, such as passing throgh solid objects, flying without wings, and even teleporting. Although each "species" is affected by our universe in a slightly different way, there are four abilities which most of them share: 1. near-invisibility; without specialized equipment, humans cannot see most Lovecraftians except in their peripheral vision 2. amorphism; many Lovecraftians seem to randomly change form to a limited degree 3. "mental toxicity"; spending too much time around a Lovecraftian can cause psychological damage; this is due to the fact that our brains cannot fully percieve the creatures' appearances 4. levitation; Lovecraftian creatures can often float around at will Lovecraftians can be classified based on their basic shape. Teuthoids are vaguely octopus- or squid-like, with radial tentacles and a central body; Volants possess batlike wing and a distinct "head"; Anthroids are somewhat humanlike in appearance; and Omnimorphs are anything that don't fit into the other classes. Additionally, Lovecraftians are classified by their danger level: level one is harmless, level two is harmless unless threatened, level three is potentially dangerous, level 4 is dangerous, and level five is extremely dangerous. An "x" indicates that the threat level is unknown; extreme caution is advised when dealing with such Lovecraftians. KNOWN "SPECIES": DOVER DEMON CLASS: ANTHROID DANGER: * Dover Demons are roughly dog-sized Lovecraftians that were among the first species to be catalogued. The first known appearance of a Dover was in the town of Dover, Massechusetts in 1997, where an individual was sighted three times wandering the town's roads. Dovers are rather unusual for Lovecraftians in that they resemble terrestrial vertebrates. They possess a very thin body and four long, gangly limbs. Each limbs splits into six fingerlike projections, which are essentially tentacles, capable of bending in any direction at any point along their length. A Dover's head is quite large compared to its body, with an enormous cranial bulge on top and a protruding "nose" or "chin" below it. Dovers possess a pair of highly-reflective eyes that appear to glow in the dark. Unlike other Lovecraftians, which, when in our universe, are immaterial and nearly invisible, Dovers are completely solid and can be seen with the naked eye. However, they appear to only stay in our reality for short periods of time before slipping back into Lovecraftia. It's possible that Dovers are being sent into our universe by an Elder Being as an experiment, presumably in order to find a way to exist fully within our laws of physics. GHOUL CLASS: TEUTHOID DANGER: *** Ghouls are vile creatures that are among the most common Lovecraftians to slip into our universe. Ghouls vaguely resemble squid; they possess similar tentacles, although a Ghoul's lack suckers, instead ending in wickedly sharp claws. A Ghoul's body, although fairly short, is extremely flexible, allowing them to squeeze through even the tightest spaces with ease. Their mouth is located on the opposite end of the body from the tentacles; Ghouls possess massively powerful jaws with long, pointed teeth. Luckily, Ghouls are scavengers by nature, and rarely attack unless provoked. They have a fondness for rotten corpses (hence their name), and often inhabit graveyards, using their partially-immaterial nature to devour cadavers without disturbing the ground. LEVIATHAN CLASS: TEUTHOID DANGER: ***** When mankind first began to explore the planet's oceans, sailors told tails of monstrous sea creatures, large enough to be mistaken for islands. Those tales, far from being myths, were encounters with leviathans. Leviathans are titanic creatures, the largest Lesser Beings known. In appearance, leviathans are resemble a cross between a squid and a whale; they possess whale-like bodies, but squidlike fins and tentacles around the tail and mouth. Leviathans are also the only species of Lovecraftian in which juvenile specimens have been reported. An adult leviathan is well over a mile in length; it's creatures like these that inspired stories of great fish whose backs resembled small islands. Smaller individuals are more common; the infamous "Bloop", a deep-sea sound recorded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), was produced by a young Leviathan. Additionally, the Bermuda Triangle is home to a fairly large population of leviathans, which are responsible for the area's unusual weather patterns and "supernatural" phenomena. LURKER CLASS: TEUTHOID DANGER: **** Lurkers are truly monstrous, a chilling example of why Lovecraftians do not belong in our universe. They are sometimes compared to a predatory umbrella; they have small bodies, surrounded by tentacles linked together by a membrane like that of the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis). However, unlike vampire squids, which are harmless, Lurkers are highly dangerous. They are predatory by nature; in their native habitat, they hunt in packs, using stealth and speed to bring down their prey. In our universe, they often stalk humans. The subconscious part of the human brain is aware of the Lurker's presence, and is constantly on high alert, giving the victim nightmares and a constant sense of unease. Combined with the natural "mental toxicity" possessed by all Lovecraftians, this can quickly result in depression and/or insanity. MOTHMAN CLASS: VOLANT DANGER: X Like Dovers, Mothmen were known to the public long before Lovecraftians were actually discovered, primarily due to the actions of one particular individual. This individual appeared in Point Pleasant, Virginia during 1966, remaining in the area until 1967. Mothmen may be related to Night Hags; they share several features in common. Mothmen stand around 8 ft. tall, and are vaguely humanoid, but lack any sort of discernable head; however, they do possess a pair of enormous glowing eyes where a human's chest would be. Instead of arms, they possess a pair of large, membranous wings, and the lower torso ends in a pair of muscular tentacle tipped with sharp claws. Mothmen, unlike other Lesser Beings, seem to be fairly intelligent, and their behavior varies depending on the situation. They are noted for theit habit of chasing cars, often overtaking them and hovering just in front of the windshield. When in flight, Mothmen produce a high-pitched squeaking noise; it's unknown whether this noise is a vocalization or a side effect of flight. Some people believe that the Mothman that appeared in point Pleasant attempted to warn them of the Silver Point Bridge collapse, as it was often sited around the bridge and disappeared when it fell. However, this conflicts with other reports that claim that Mothmen are highly aggressive, attacking pets and vehicles without provocation. As no specimens have been captured, the their true nature is currently unknown. NIGHT HAG CLASS: VOLANT DANGER: ** Of all Lovecraftian species, Night Hags are probably the ones that humans have the most contact with. "Night hag" is a term that refers to sleep paralysis, a state in which a sleeping person suddenly half-awakens to find themselves unable to move, and even seeing a creature sitting on their chest and preventing them from breathing normally. Although this was dismissed as a problem with the victim's brain or muscles in the past, it is now known that sleep paralysis is often cause by Night Hags. These creatures, although harmless, are monstrous in appearance, with large, batlike wings and enormous, highly reflective eyes. Where legs would be on a terrestial animal, Night Hags have a cluster of tentacles. Night Hags are extremely social, and when deprived of contact with others of their kind, seek out the next best thing- a human heartbeat, which closely resembles the sound that Night Hags make when content. When a Night Hag finds a sleeper, it will perch on their chest, using its tentacles to feel their heartbeat (the immaterial nature of the creature can interfere with nerve impulses, hence the paralysis). When the Night Hag truly relaxes, it becomes visible to humans in their half-awake state, and this accounts for some people seeing demonic creatures perched on their bodies. When their human is awake, a Night Hag will often follow them around, even protecting them from danger. ROPER CLASS: TEUTHOID DANGER: *** Ropers are powerful, vicious predators and one of the few Lovecraftians that actively prey on humans. They vaguely resemble Lurkers, with octopoid bodies and tentacles linked by membranes. However, a Roper's tentacles are linked only at the base, and are far longer than those of a Lurker. Where suckers would be on an octopus, Ropers have curved "teeth", which are used to grip prey. The name "Roper" comes from the fact that Ropers have four highly elongated tendrils which they can use to snare victims. Ropers are normally invisible to humans. When they get close enough to their prey, they abruptly become visible, seizing their victim and then disappearing again. SLENDERMAN CLASS: ANTHROID DANGER: ***** In popular culture, the Slender Man is a being created by Victor Surge on the Something Awful forums in 2009 as part of a paranormal pictures contest. It quickly spawned a wave of fans, resulting in numerous videos, stories, and art. However, in reality, Slendermen are sinister, parasitic Lovecraftians. Victor Surge, although unaware of it, was host to a Slenderman for a period, which influenced the creation of his monster. The real Slenderman is similar to the fictional one; it is roughly humanoid, with long, thin limbs and a white, featureless face. Markings on its chest resemble a cuff and tie, making it appear to be wearing a tuxedo. Like its cousin the Dover Demon, the Slenderman possesses six-fingered "hands"; however, Slendermen, unlike Dovers, can transform their limbs into long, highly flexible tendrils that resemble tree branches. Slendermen exist in our universe by attaching themselves to humans; when a human is host to a Slenderman, they become "mentally imprinted" with the creature's appearance, and this often translates into an obsession with the popular culture version of the Slenderman. Slendermen rarely stay on one host for long periods; they constantly move, searching for children. Children appear to be highly desirable hosts for Slendermen, and those children who become hosts often disappear after a few weeks. What becomes of these victims is unknown. When not attached to a host, Slendermen are extremely dangerous; the abilities attributed to the fictional Slender Man are all very real.
