Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

You don't know who David Attenborough is? Have you never seen a Life program? He's the most famous natural history presenter in existence! He's been on the box for fifty years! Have you been living in a cave or something?

Okay, now I've seen the first episode and I noticed they featured chaoyangopterygid pterosaurs as one of Spinosaur's dishes. This is actually rather good, because undescribed chaoyangopterygids have been found in Africa.

It has John Faa's seal of approval, that means anything T. Neo says from this point onward is null and void.

My favourite Natural History presenters are mostly British - SIR David Attenborough is the BEST in the world at this - number 1 because he knows what he is talking about! That makes all the difference to me, when they know or care what they're narrating.

I watched a great doco today about Hippos in Zaire, narrated by Steven Fry - he has a casual interest in Natural History, and I like his style.

I HATE Jeremy Irons tho, just because he did Scar's voice in the Lion King - they think he's some kinda predator guru? I can't bear to listen to him narrating documentaries of any sort.

There's quite a few Scotsmen narrating docos, it might be something to do with surveys conducted by British banks, where they have consistenlty found that most respondents find that people with Scottish accents sound more trustworthy - and thus the banks have a preference for employing Scots in their call centres.

In the 70s and 80s, all US documentaries were narrated either by Lorne Green (a Canook) - he was in Bonanza and the first Battlestar Galactica TV show and movie - or - James Earl Jones - apologies to Americans out there - but I HATE hearing "herbivore" pronounced as "ER-bivore" - it distracts from my view / listening pleasure and I have to switch off...

I'd rather have a scientist or someone with an interest in the subject material narrate it - or at least an unknown - I HATE CELEBRITY narration!

And I don't know of many Australian narrators - I still reckon I prefer to hear a "BBC" accent narrating docos... Steve Irwin is an embarrassing caricature of us - I never liked any of his stuff - hamming it up for the camera, sensationalised science for entertainment value only... There's a show sometimes on Nat Geo or Discovery or Animal planet about an Aussie (West Aussie too!) bloke who rides around on a Sportster (a Harley designed for female riders) and catches snakes - that's okay - and one of my favourite nature docos from the 70s was "Harry Butler in the Wild" - he's a great Australian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Butler) and a hands on naturalist - he's not well liked by some of the more hysterical types (e.g. PETA) - he always carries a gun with him to shoot feral animals - especially cats.

Bush Tucker Man with Major Les Hiddins is pretty good - look him up on Youtube under "Bush Tucker Man"...

A BRILLIANT piss take (satire) of Australian Nature Documentary style is Russell Coight's All Australian Adventures ("coit" is another Australian colloquialism for anus) :

Kenneth Branagh did WWD, IIRC. He's an actor.

Australians are usually cool, but people like different things from narrators. No narrator will please everyone.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Sir David Attenborough is brilliant, he has the ability to magically narrate magical phenomena. His stuff tends to be the best... ever.

Branagh's WWD narration was good, too.

Must be quite old, there hasn't been a Zaire since '97. He's just done a series about whales called Ocean Giants you might like. He also did the follow-up TV series to Last Chance to See, taking the place of Douglas Adams. I did enjoy that, though Mark Carwardine seems a bit of a prick.

Same here. I'm mellowing to the way Americans treat English, but I'll never get over 'Urbs.

I quite liked Erwin, for a while I thought that was the only way you could really make reptiles interesting enough for TV. I'll never forget watch one of his shows, looking at Gorillas in a UK zoo. They kept putting up subtitles for all the English people.

Maybe not Zaire then? Some African nation starting with Z (and it's "Zed" not "Zee"!!! :)) then - the documentary was "Hippo Beach" :
