| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I know that there are some pretty realistic concepts of alien lifeforms that I've seen around, but what I've noticed is that the technology of many aliens is WAY to earth-like, such as guns, dwellings, starships, and tools, heck, alien technology might not be based off of metals at all, it could be based on telekenesis, organic manipulation, crystals, or materials not even native to earth. I want to see some more realistic technology of alien races. |

Maybe the tools are for the same use as human tools. So they are similar to Earth tools. |

I wish I could give the public a true picture of the queen as she appeared at her best, but this would be impossible, even had she permitted a photograph to be taken, for her charming play of expression while in conversation, the character and intellect which were then revealed, were only half seen when the face was in repose. -Lilias Underwood when speaking of Empress Myeongseong "I was born in the dark. I went out into the light, and your Majesty, it is my displeasure to inform you that I have returned to the dark. I envision a Seoul of towering buildings filled with Western establishments that will place herself back above the Japanese barbarians. Great things lie ahead for the Kingdom, great things. We must take action, your Majesty, without hesitation, to further modernize this still ancient kingdom."-Min Young-ik to Empress Myeongseong | |

I always belived that some alien races travell through the universe inside a bubble-like structure made with gases and controled with telekinesis. |

That's exactly what a race in the game I'm working on does.

Really? Cool. What's the name of the game? Oh, and I also belive that the hostile races travel in spaceships that were built with bio-technology. |

Well it's actually a sequal to a game that is yet to be made, but we're working on both at the same time. Anyways, it's called Power and Vengeance. Edited by ChumZar, Jul 17 2008, 06:52 PM.

There is a good point made here. ![]() And yes, alien technology would be considerably different in build to suit the need of their own body. Though, there are many instances in pop culture where aliens are using anthropocentric technology. |

Hmmm... maybe not quite like human technology per se... Think about the advent of guns. We use them because they could penetrate our skin from a distance. But what would an analogue of guns look like when another species made it? Tougher skin, perhaps? Those with telekinesis or psychic powers? Maybe a projectile-based weapon from the toughskins would use energy-based rounds instead of solid rounds. Or maybe they would just contend with big swords or something. Telekinetical species would probably use no physical form of weaponry; they would make psychic amplifiers to focus their power or disrupt other's powers. Maybe some of them uses bioengineering to modify their own bodies... as living weapons or tools. |

I've thought of a race that is "psychic". Their brains have three extra lobes (star shaped); one is a transmitter and one is a reciever (for telekintic communication and other uses) and one is a "mouth". The "mouth" attacks other creature's brains and absorbs energy by drawing on the pyscho-electromagnetic currents that are produced by a working brain (in the same way our bodies produce heat). They attack using the telekinesis and disabling the prey's defenses psychologically (like defeating an enemy plane by attacking its computers instead of the plane itself). The only problem is that all of this requires so much thought power that the race (which is a sophont) cannot function intelligently as individuals. Therefore they use the transmitter/reciever to function as one (like ants). I called them Omnipsychos Holosapiens (All Minds, Single Thinker). They have two species (sexes I suppose); workers (who are equipped to do physical interactions with the world) and queens (who cannot move or such but acts as the main brain and central modem of all the members of a queendom). The creatures are silicon based, so they don't sexually reproduce. The workers gather food (the queen gains energy by digesting "organic" matter) and materials for the queen; the food to keep her alive and the materials which will be broken down into materials for building more SNA (Silicon Nucleic Acid), as their bodies do not naturally produce more cells (they are not composed of cells, which makes them difficult to classify). Unlike ants they individuals do have minds of their own; very simple ones. Their history consists of "Break Forums" or times when unassigned workers would gang together to become their own sub-hive mind. Most scientific advancements in their history were made that way. Anyways, now that all that is out of the way...Their warfare is based on trying to get more minds banded together. The more minds working as one, the stronger their attack is. During war, queens isolate themselves from their workers to avoid being attacked by the enemy using the workers as a path to her mind. Instead the workers will band together and try to either kill the other workers or break into the enemy queens "mind network". When a queen dies, the workers must find a new queen quickly or they will die, as workers without a queen are like a computer without software (it is worthless and will not attempt to protect itself or continue its existance in any way). Usually when a queen dies in war, the dead queens workers join the winning queen. There have been workers so loyal that they choose to die instead. As war progressed their technology, they began to have a civilization based on agriculture for the queen and pyscho-technology for war. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Not to be a killjoy, but as long as the laws of physics continue to operate as they do on our planet, I don't think it will be conceivable to have telekinetic bubbles, psychic weaponry, etc. anywhere. If we discover any race that is around our level of advancement today, chances are they will be using similar tech. Of course, there could be mayor differences due to that species' culture. There could be more biotech or weapons could be predominantly chemical, etc. However, if we discover an alien race that has advanced considerably, then we probably won't figure out what they use or how they do it. In fact, the artifacts of a highly advanced race will probably look like natural phenomena to us. |

I've never seen the laws of physics say "psychic powers don't work". I'm sure they could work and do work somewhere in our universe. We don't know anything about "psychic powers" and are therefore in no position to say how they would (or do) work. And who says physics are the same throughout the universe? Have you been to every inch of the universe, seen every single phenomenon ever to exist? We are not, and never will be, in a position to say what is and is not possible. If we were, there would be no need for speculation. |

What about completely organic technology from a species capable of manipulating their DNA. Organic structures and machines both use similar methods to opperate. |

sounds interesting and this topic has a good point. as for the types of tech your talking about check out the story lines of starcraft, warhammer 40k, and other sci fi things with origanality from us.(there is some very interesting concepts.) |

It's very likely that aliens would have different kinds of technology, but some things are bound to be similar -often because the design is so basic-, boats for example. The whole psychic powers thing, that would be biological -in some way- like hands, unless you are talking about implants that allow the critters this ability I don't see why it would be mentioned in this thread. guns might be something that an alien race never produces simply because the idea to use explosives to fling projectiles at your enemy was never thought up, humans had heavily armored knights wielding giant swords when guns and cannons began being used, I imagine the armored knights would just continue being developed and perfected if such weapons never appeared. Environmental conditions would also help decide what the critters would use for tech, if they lived in a place where metal would corrode plastics and organic material would play the major parts, if they lived in a place where anything dead was quickly rotted into nothing by molds then they couldn't possibly use equivalents of wood for building or fire, and would likely rely on stone and chemical reactions to power their technological rise. Then there are a variety of other things, such as which branch got lucky and was most popular, or if someone struck a deal to snuff out some technology or material(hemp rope, hydrogen car, etc.) or one of the many other happy things that are caused by culture and the critters themselves. |
