| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! We all have cool ideas for things we'd love to do or make, art, novels, films and so on. But unless you actually have something to show us such as concept art or a first draft I think you should discuss it here so we don't have dozens of topics of people talking about their cool ideas. |

Colony drop? Surely nobody could get anything big enough to make a mess in space by the 90's. Unless they proper kinetic weapons. |

Okay, okay. Here's how it went. The Soviet Union puts up a laser-equipped satellite that starts shooting American spy satellites out of orbit (they actually tried that in real life in 1987, but it didn't work). The United Staes considers this an act of war, and before you know it, World War III's begun. As well as fighting by more conventional means, the United States responds by building a manned military space station for the same purpose. It is launched by the Space Shuttle in 1988. Meanwhile, the Soviet Union has put its Buran shuttle into service and also introduced its Uragan space fighter (both of which were cancelled in our timeline, the Uragan before being flown) and converts the Mir space station to a recconnaisance observatory. |

There's the moon. According to a recent USAF report, the moon is strategically important because it is the highest possible ground you can get on the Earth. Don't ask me how they came to that conclusion, but it makes sense. Can't get much higher than the moon. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Recent? In the 60's people figured out that space was more or less a useless place to put your nuclear weapons. Orbit is bad, the moon is worse. We're quite used to thinking in massive comic scales but the moon is really far away. By the time your missile gets to earth the other side could have launched all their missiles and dropped all their bombs. Even at absurd speeds it's going to take days to get to the earth, and you want to hit a particular part of earth. Do you think if it was really useful that the USSR and USA would have signed a treaty agreeing not to have nukes in space? As a base for nuclear weapons I suppose the Moon is not terrible for giving your faction second strike capability, though submarines are much cheaper and more effective than either a manned moon base or a unmanned silo vulnerable to someone else launching your missiles. Mind you, those pretty boys in their shiny planes will say anything to get more funding, so you might be correct that there was a report. |

I think mooncrete is just useful for building stuff on the moon, no reason to ship it back to earth unless some loony rich guy wants a house built out of it or something. The moon's resources might be important, but that does not mean it's of military importance. Parasky was talking about it's value as the ultimate high ground. It's the difference between Gibraltar and the Congo. Anyway I'm think about having a second civil war in the US, early in the 20th century. What sort of factions do you think will work? I'm thinking maybe a three way one with "socialists", anyone from people who want to break up monopolies to "burn everything" anarchists forming one faction. The other lead by somewhat fascist people, who mostly attack the socialists and try to take over the government, which is the final faction that tries to keep things together. Thoughts? Notes for the Belgium-Dutch War. These are mostly for be, but if you can see any flaws in them point them out. 1. Revolt in Dutch East Indies, supported by Belgium and Italy/France. Draws best officers, troops and lots of ships away from the Netherlands. Probably Javanese revolt. Maybe Balinese. 2. Belgium coastal fortifications (think completed Atlantic wall) combined with airforce, short coastline and lots of minelayers render Dutch navy impotent. 3. Yearly military exercises in northern Belgium lull Dutch into false sense of security 4. Four pronged attack on Belgium. 4a. Pumping stations bombed, preventing the Dutch flooding the countryside to slow advance 4b. Paratroopers capture key bridges 4c. Massive armoured thrust charges towards Amsterdam 4d. Slower moving occupation forces moves into Catholic regions of the Netherlands, also secure supply route to Amsterdam 5. Dutch manage to hold Amsterdam, Germans declare war on Belgium, invade. 6. France declare war on Germany, rushes to defend Liège. 7. Frantic Austrian and British efforts end the war diplomatically 8. Status quo ante bellum, Belgium on the road to being annexed by France. Here's this concept I had lately. It's a world where Yorick posts his concepts and ideas in this topic like he should, instead of making seperate topics for them. YOU HEAR ME YORICK!? YOUR IDEAS DO NOT MERIT THEIR OWN TOPICS. STOP CLUTTERING THE CAFE WITH SOMETHING THAT SHOULD GO IN THIS TOPIC. GAWD YOU MAKE ME WANT TO PUNCH BABIES. Ahem, now that I have that out of my system, I need to go work on my Ponyfic. |

I have a great title and the kernel of a premise here but I'm looking for how the conflict can sustain itself. The title is "The Last Romanov" and it assumes that some of the Romanovs escaped the massacre-including Anastasia Romanov-and fled to America under new names. The present-day descendant of Anastasia, a teenage girl from NYC, learns the truth about her family's origins and an American agent protects her from assassins and kidnappers as they make the dangerous trek to Russia to place her on the throne and make her the first Czarina in nearly a century. A corrupt Russian government will stop at nothing to prevent her restoration while the Russian mob plans to exploit her somehow. But the problem, is is what it to stop the main characters from simply going on TV or the internet and reveal themselves and foil the villain's schemes? |

Some Russians do. But that story makes no sense. How can the monarchy be restored when the government opposes it? |
