| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. We all have cool ideas for things we'd love to do or make, art, novels, films and so on. But unless you actually have something to show us such as concept art or a first draft I think you should discuss it here so we don't have dozens of topics of people talking about their cool ideas. |

I agree about China - being insular... Just before the Hispanic age of discover, China were poised to become a major colonial power - but they sunk back inside themselves - they had the largest fleet of seafaring trading and war ships on the planet - and had sailed as far as East Africa. How about this ? Carthage becomes so dominant in the West, that it's successor states and vassals are able to repel the attacks from Hunnic and Mongolic and Turkic tribes (i.e. the Khazars, Huns, Gepids, Gokturks etc 300AD to 900AD, then the Mongols 1200 AD, then the Seljuks and Ottomans 1200-1500 AD) - who instead turn on China (I know China was conquered several times by Steppe people) and destroy it? No China? Some aggressive expansionist Turkic dynasty instead of the Ming dynasty. Perhaps some Carthaginian successor state conquers the East Coast of America, and possibly southern America, whilst the Warlike Turkic/Mongolic dynasty conquers / the West Coast (after conquering Japan)? And what's happening in the Levant all this time? How would a fellow semitic conqueror react to the likes of Jesus? Basically Judaiism is the same religion as that of the Carthaginians and Phoenicians and Canaanites, less a few deities. |

Indeed, to the south of China were some very rich states, and China was happy to just leave them as vassals. You could have a Northern dynasty run by conquering steppe people. Manchu, Turks, Mongols. Whoever you're most interested in. And the South is a Han Dynasty that has to be innovative to survive. For them Taiwan ends up being like our Ireland, a place to cut their colonial teeth, and the go on to spread through the South Pacific until the get to the Americas. |

Well having studied Latin since I was 10, I have to say that it is unlikely that the Carthiginians were true empire builders. They were more intent on dominating trade routes rather than taking entire nations. Instead what would happen is that Carthage would become the main hub of Europe and most of the nearby states would pledge to fight for it. The Greeks could in fact rise again in this world given the chance, much of Carthages armies would be made up of greeks in fact. The rise of Jesus? Would most likely be ignored. THe carthaginians were tolerant due to the vast amount of creeds within their borders. Perhaps without the persecution Jesus may have never got the attention and would have become another forgotten prophet. Technological advances would be far greater with the library of Alexandria still standing. Steam engines could have come very early on. Northern Europe would have remained how it was pre Rome although Carthage would have traded with Britain for metals and other rare items. |

Well assuming Jesus was real/people believe in him then without the Romans to put down the Jewish revolts, Christianity will just remain a small cult., and even if it did get big, without Rome it probably would not spread as well. So Carthage was more like the Netherlands then? Interesting. |

I read somewhere that England, in the 1800s admired Carthage, and thought of themselves as like Carthage, with their huge fleet of ships, and vast mercantile empire... It was even used as an argument by "Aryan" loony pseudo-anthropologists to show that the English were more "semitic" than mainland Germanic people (despite Yiddish being a dialect of German!). But both England and Netherlands were probably the least anti-Semitic countries in 19th Century Europle (except maybe the Ottomans?). |

I think you've got that a bit backwards, that was the French comparing themselves to Roman and us to Carthage, a tyrants of the seas that must be destroyed if they were to flourish. Spoiler: click to toggle
Well considering for about half of it we were run by a Jewish chap, then yeah. But that's probably partly because while we've had a pretty health population since the Normans came over, we've never had as many as were in Germany or Russia. Edited by lamna, Sep 3 2011, 10:44 AM.

Exactly. Their true stregnth lay in their navy, whose power was largely uncontested. Only the Romans could match. With Rome out of the picture the Carthaginians would dominate the entire Medditerranean. |

Anyway I thought I'd mention in the only Pax Carthago alternate history I know, science never really takes off. People tinker, but they don't do many experiments. |

I thought simple steam engines were already being made back then, they just had nothing to apply them to other than trinkets of mild interest... |

Well yes because slave labour was far more abundant and cheaper. Steam powered ships on the other hand they were yet to think of. |

Here's my story idea, and you'll need to know a bit of obscure history to understand it. In 1987 the Soviet Union tried to launch an armed military satellite equipped with an anti-missile laser , but it failed to reach orbit and fell into the Pacific Ocean. So, what if that launch had been successful? Here's my pitch. It's 1992, the year after the Soviet Union broke up in real life. In this timeline, the United States and the Soviet Union have been at war for five years, and the war is being fought--for the first time--in space. The protagonist is a US Air Force astronaut on a "space battle station" orbiting Earth. While searching for Soviet spy satellites, the space station picks up a radio signal--a distress call--from an unidentified spacecraft. |

A five year war with the USSR, without it turning into missile free-for-all? Interesting, how does that work? |

Nuclear weapons are still used, both by the Americans and the Soviets, but not as much as was expected mainly because they're not "the next big thing" anymore. When the Soviet Union launched their armed satellite, the focus of military strategy shifted to space. So instead of a short, all-out nuclear war, the two powers fought to control Earth orbit, resulting in a more drawn-out conflict both in space and on the ground. So much fighting has been done in space, in fact, that low-Earth orbit is now congested with the remains of destroyed spacecraft, and has become a sort of no-man's-land referred to as the "Graveyard Zone." |
