| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. We all have cool ideas for things we'd love to do or make, art, novels, films and so on. But unless you actually have something to show us such as concept art or a first draft I think you should discuss it here so we don't have dozens of topics of people talking about their cool ideas. |

Well I have a story in mind about an alien invasion,I made a topic earlier about it,which is told by logs find all around the world. The logs were made by survivor which writes all the thing they saw before and after the invasion.I want to start a story with logs because I think is more creative and more easy than a common story. |

Hi, Nano here! Today, after seeing Cowboys vs Aliens, I saw a sign with the JP logo on it outside the cinema. I'm guessing it's the same one as the one we know and love, but what about ideas for a remake? Well, here's my ideas: 1. Feathered raptor and (possibly) T-rex Now, many people hate feathered theropods. Well, I'm disagreeing. My reasons? A. Epic feathered Gorgosaurus from March of the Dinosaurs ![]() B. Epic feathered Deinonychus ![]() 2. T-rex with good eyesight Some say this will ruin the jeep scene. I'd like to differ. When T-rex attacks the jeep and knocks it over, we could see some oil coming out of the car. T-rex sniffs it, and then moves his head back, suggesting that the oil's stopping him from smelling the kids. They're hiding behind the seats, and rexy looks around. It goes to a viewpoint near the kids, where they're being scared. T-rex looks over jeep, and puts her foot on it. It tears off a large chunk of the car, and the kids are revealed. Rex bites at them, but the kids have scrambled away. It sees them, and roars, before stepping over the remains of the jeep and chasing them. As the T-rex gets closer, they're stuck between T-rex and the drop, and they jump. 3. Dilo has a more prominent role, and is awesome Okay, so the fans still want their chunk of big scaly flesh-eater? Enter the King of the Late Triassic, Dilophosaurus. Replace the little Nedry-killer and let Dilophosaurus be shown as the mean, crested killer it was. It can't get out of the exhibit, due to the cables, before Nedry comes in. He gets stuck near the waterfall. Cue cute baby Dilo. Nedry attempts to get it away, and throws his stick, but the baby gets agitated and calls for mommy. Mommy comes in, and hisses at Nedry, and she chases him back to the car. He gets in, and closes the door. He think's he's safe, but the window is smashed. The view goes to outside the car, and you see the car with the Dilo sticking its head in and Nedry screaming. Dilo and her baby then find the open exit. It'd be perfect for some indoor chaos, like if it got into the place where Hammond and the others are. It's scared off by the gunshots, and lives. Also, if they add a scene where the raptors are about to find someone, before there's an epic fight scene with Dilo vs raptor. The raptor pack suffers losses, but one jumps on Dilo's head, clamps its jaws shut, and pierces the Dilo's neck. 4. The raptor is specified to be something that fits the size. Speaks for itself, really. Probably Deinonychus, and called 'raptor' after the kids mistake it for a Velociraptor. Most of the scenes the raptor's in will probably have the kids, so they can call it 'raptor' as much as they like. Thoughts? |

Perhaps not do what you suggested and make it closer to the book. Because what you suggested is both silly and wrong. In the book, it's implied Dr. Wu had altered the dinosaurs to be less efficent. Edited by Kamidio, Aug 28 2011, 06:48 PM.

Somehow I think a less efficient dinosaur is still far more efficient than any mammal. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

It's because they're reptiles. Reptiles tend to be the more badass animals. However, humans are the most efficent animal, seeing as we have sapience. |

More successful in terms of their survival. Humans aren't real successful in terms of survival, if you think about it. We create a really safe environment for ourselves, but ultimately we have become totally defenseless to nature's wrath. I mean, lots of humans get killed by dogs; an animals they are easily two to three times bigger than (depending on the type of dog). Even the biggest dog is still weak in comparison to human muscles at their prime. We are still apes after all, no matter how smart we are. Dinosaurs, now they were good at survival. Mammals can get big and mean, but come on. Things like bears and wolves are jokes compared to T-Rex and utahraptor. A pack of utahraptors would eat a pack of wolves for breakfast, and then a bear for second breakfast. |

Yeah but that's like saying without a shell a hermit crab is almost defenceless, or termites can't live without their mound. We're not supposed to. |

I agree with Lamna. Saying humans suck because if left in the wilderness alone, they will die is terrible logic, because humans a social by nature, and part of our nature is mold things to suit our needs. Parasky, you just got owned. |

For the thing about making the dinos less efficient, that's for safety. In the book, it says that Hammond wants to make his dinosaurs the 'real thing', at least in visible terms. So, if that's the case, the least we could do is have the raptors feathery. T-rex doesn't really need it, and the ceratopsians and other creatures can do fine without quills. What about the other stuff? |

I'd hate to see the original JP remade, or "rebooted" as they call it these days... The CGI dinos in that movie are better than most of the CGI dinosaurs in Walking With Dinosaurs... I've actually noticed a significant drop in the quality of CGI in documentaries over the last 5-10 years - which seems bizarre, the amount of computing grunt is (see Moore's law) exponentially cheaper these days, the expense is in paying talented CGI artists - the good ones are probably all working for hollywood or the games industry... I'd love to see a well made sequel to the last one.... Or go the whole hog, full on Hollywood cheese, Alien VS Predator VS Velociraptor VS T-Rex ? Edited by Zoroaster, Aug 29 2011, 08:54 AM.

Because Jurassic Park was written in the 80's. It was acurate at that time, but it's now outdated. So how about while we're at it, we make Jaws into an accurate shark, or E.T. into a realistic alien? Huh? HUH!? Yeah, that's what I thought.
