| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. We all have cool ideas for things we'd love to do or make, art, novels, films and so on. But unless you actually have something to show us such as concept art or a first draft I think you should discuss it here so we don't have dozens of topics of people talking about their cool ideas. |

I had a story... A story of the gods! Morpheus, god of dreams, had a son. The child's mother was a mortal. The relationship did not end well for Morpheus, hence his strong xenophobia of the world outside his own little world. Anyway, Morpheus has a son named Telephus. Because of his half-mortal heritage, Telephus is a demigod. However, due to being raised in the Land of the Gods, he is much more powerful than your average demigod -- his power is almost godlike. Morpheus uses pure Dreamforms as servants, and also as Telephus' homeschool teachers (Morpheus is too busy working to teach his son). Telephus has been forbidden to leave the Sleeping Palace; another negative side effect of Morpheus' xenophobia. So naturally, the kid decides to peep over the wall. Daydream, a Dreamform that has been employed by Morpheus for so long that it's begun to grow a personality, blabs to Morpheus. Morpheus sends Telephus to his room, whereupon he is rescued/kidnapped by Eostre, who informs him that Morpheus is slowly putting the entire cosmos into a comma. In their adventures, they encounter Pan, Hades, Echidna (the Goddess of Monsters in my story), Al Capone, Oberon, the Gregori, and the deadly and mysterious Phobos, god of nightmares, among other characters. So, whadya think? I'm thinking of posting here, on Cafe Cosmique. Also, for anyone who's interested, I'm trashing the Theosphere. No one seems interested and I noticed that my multiverse has too many flaws. Maybe I'll bring it out again when I can think of a way to make it more plausible. |

Note, a band of dragons adventures across the land to recover their treasure stolen and hoarded by a greedy King. Edit: He, or his ancestor, also stole their fire. Dragon-fire is the only way to get to the treasure or is in some way vital, so they have to take a wingless drake with them, along with a human for all the sneaky bits where a dragon would stand out. Perhaps the human is on his own quest, and the dragons are just a minor part of his tale. Or hers. Intunecime: A vast female dragon, daughter of the last ruler of the land. Jet black body and back with a cream while stomach. She is patient and thoughtful, and focused on avenging her family and reclaiming her right. Potensvermiculus: Medium sized male red dragon, aggressive and impetuous. He's the best fighter of the band and the most angry at not being able to breath fire, though he was not hatched when the lands were conquered. Merch: A small, greenish brown dragon, she was born and raised in the wilderness. She never had fire and her ancestors were not harassed by the King. She joined up because she was bored and because she did not want to spend her whole life laying eggs and hunting deer. Brand: A small burnt orange, rather plump, wingless dragon-like creature, Brand lives in a cave above a village. In exchange for not harassing flocks or attacks people, he gets an animal each month, and can hunt in the forests north of the village, and he protects the village from raiders. The village gained a reputation as a safe place and has grown into a small town that can defend itself. Drake isn't interested in adventure, at least at the start. But the dragon's need dragon-fire to reclaim their hoard, and the fire of Drakes is the closest available. Princess Gwendolyn: The Gwen is a cunning woman, who wishes to carve out a kingdom to rule, based on her vaguely royal bloodline. She requires a magic sword in possession of the king, which is how she first comes to work with the dragons, though she eventually forms a friendship with them, and realises how useful three wealthy fire breathing dragons would be, and that there is likely to be a power vacuum in the Kingdom when the dragons are finished. I have the idea of a story involving a city built on the sides of a C shaped cliff, the inside. It would be sort of a steampunk, dieselpunk, skyworld fantasy setting. The original concept was to anthropomorphize a beehive, and follow the life of a guard, with an eventual invasion of hornet raiders that decimate the city. "You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

I was thinking a roaming clan who's lifestyle revolves around raiding settlements. Perhaps it could be the beginnings of a distant empire extending its tendril of power into the area. I don't really consider myself all that well at character design, or following a single (or handful) person about in a story.. I'm much better at developing general areas and setting up how something works.. I'll have to work on that. --- Yea, I like that empire idea. In the end of the story I think that the guard that we follow should escort a small band of survivors out of the city in search of a new land to start a new settlement. They would look back as their home for a hundred generations burns and massive enemy ships hover about quietly in the air. Edited by colddigger, Oct 29 2012, 12:14 AM.

Perhaps they birth in massive numbers on a regular basis, so they need to raid other stable populations to sustain their own. The raiding provides them with food, and in addition it thins their numbers to make their population more manageable. After the raids they return to wherever they came from, with the strongest and most intelligent among them having survived to add to their civilization and breed. Thus each generation of the swarm is more powerful than the last, and with every generation they bring new riches and whatever else they like from the raided peoples to add to their own culture and coffers. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

As NaNoWriMo is currently in play I think it is a lovely time to at least attempt some basic outline for my story. If I actually do write that story.. Also to continue on Parasky's suggestion, I like the idea of a raider civilization that does not control its population other than through violence during attacks. Though I don't think that the women having incredibly high birthrates is realistic I can see twins and frequent births being common occurrences through natural and cultural selection. The food as well, if they had begun on a peak that originally was prosperous to allow for a culture that expects higher population, then a sudden streak of famine could stimulate them to take on a raider lifestyle. This maintenance of their population numbers by taking from others could stimulate population growth further as a cry for more raiders occurs. In a manner of speaking there can be a positive feedback loop which eventually hits a tipping point where, although high population for lots of raiders means lots of food, when a mentality that results in the self sacrifice of a raider there would be an increase of resource gain and a temporary decrease of required spending of said resource. This, assuming the raider already produced children (which would likely influence this self sacrifice mentality) the environment back home would be more favorable and stimulate the production of more raiders with such a mentality. This may be counterbalanced if the environment becomes too favorable, leading to those who are not willing to die in exchange for a slightly less enjoyable home life. It could be a cyclical process over the course of decades. |

I would also suggest another colony similar to your bee people who live on various islands. Thus, if the hornets send in scouts, these island people sends in ships and burn down the scout ship with flaming arrows(Ala Japanese honey bees). Thus you can cover the neato technique bees use to burn hornets. |
