| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! We all have cool ideas for things we'd love to do or make, art, novels, films and so on. But unless you actually have something to show us such as concept art or a first draft I think you should discuss it here so we don't have dozens of topics of people talking about their cool ideas. |

I don't think that will happen here. No empire for empire's sake, not yet anyway. Trading posts are much more cost effective. Think of this like empires from from the 1500's to the 1700's. A few settlements but mostly just places set up to trade with the natives. Uniting against a common foe would not be very hard, most of the peoples either are indifferent to or on good terms with their neighbours. And those who don't get along would probably ally themselves with the invader. Then there is the logistics of invading. This isn't hopping across the English Channel, you have to sail a long way to get there, and compared to the Kingdom it's not a very valuable prize. If there is a story in there it's about the City trying to wipe out the pirates without starting a larger was with Dwarven kingdom that's at least nominally in control of the mining region. |

So how about an alternative where by the time WW2 rolls around the UK has fallen into havoc and the way in which the island fights the Nazis becomes more complex with the southern territories immediately being taken while the northern territories hold out? |

What would be the social implications of this very morbid lottery? The premise is, the government (let's say future second depression era America) gives its downtrodden the opportunity of a lifetime. For $100, you get the chance to win $100 mil-and that's AFTER taxes! Buy as many $100 tickets you want a week, giving you more and more chances for your number (and I do mean YOUR number since multiple can't win) to be called up. The catch is this: You die after 10 years of winning. You get something in your brain or heart surgically implanted that kills you-quickly and painlessly of course-approximately 10 years after the week of the surgical operation. You can either forfeit your money then and continue on with the rest of your life or you get the operation and enjoy your millions for the next 10 years. What do you think? How bad could this be? The only people that would participate in the lottery would be the elderly or terminally ill but I can see desperate junkies or parents wanting to provide for their families participating. Why bother with an implant that just saises the costs for the lottery company? It'd be easier to just have them sign a contract to give the company all their money when they die. This would even make the lottery richer over time instead of having to pay for the surgeries. |

Like Fakey said, too easy to cheat when you have 100 million dollars. Just have them sign over their money after death and the gov. hire someone to murder them, and keep it like an underground rumor about why the winners seem to die within a decade (no set date even). |

Perhaps a better idea would be they get a place in some sorta really nice fancy colony but they get to live there ten years, after that they are killed so a new person can move in? |

I think this is the beginning of a premise for a good movie. It could be like "Soylent Green" for the 21st century if done right. Are you going to see "In Time" this weekend? |

Forgot about that movie so probably not... I personally have an issue with the "issues" that people bring up with indefinite longevity, no there is no real threat of overpopulation from it which would result in issuing madantory lifespans, just stop having fucking babies. Sterilize, or better yet go colonize outer space. I actually had an idea about a system where people basically never died from old age (because of indefinite longevity of course, it's the right term yea?) but continued to have offspring and the species continued to evolve so there would be these youngsters (maybe 50ish) hanging around with their ancestors of 80,000 years and ocassionally finding one of the firsts which are like several million years just chilling somewhere. |

100 dollars, assuming their is no crazy inflation seems like a lot to pay each week for the chance to be killed. They say people who buy into the lottery don't understand odds, but I doubt they are that stupid. |
