| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. We all have cool ideas for things we'd love to do or make, art, novels, films and so on. But unless you actually have something to show us such as concept art or a first draft I think you should discuss it here so we don't have dozens of topics of people talking about their cool ideas. |

I've been rolling around an idea for a novel or story or whatever for a while now. I've mostly developed ideas for the world rather than the characters which is kiiiind of the wrong way to do it if there were a wrong way. Anyway, the basic idea is that this world is fairly like ours but that demons and demon hunters/slayers are real things. But not in the same sense as most stories, fire and brimstone or Japanese oni or whatever. The demons in my story could be described as often self aware memetic parasites, the higher ones being comparable to split personalities that hijack the person's body for their own needs. They've been classified mainly on their method of spreading and the way they affect their host, they of course mutate and and such so it makes sense. They rely heavily on people's natural mimicking and habit making. I'm wondering about their origins though, I'm thinking that it could have started with a brain parasite, some kind of biological organism (redundant), that triggered a behavior that other people would mimic and through that mimicry become infected. As time went on the behavior would continue to be spread regardless if the parasite was being passed on or not, and as the behaviors spread they altered through selection to become more subtle, contagious, and effective. Modern Demons (or Daemons I suppose, not sure which would be nicer to use) often are timed in that they don't take effect immediately after exposure, many are fairly harmless, but there are others that cause physiological issues like heart attacks or will cause the host to commit suicide. The most dangerous ones are the self aware ones that actively attempt to infect "clean" people through cults, advertising, or any other various method that can incorporate their way of replication. One group that I've thought about were visual replicators, these Demons set down a visual trigger that seeds the mind and the Demon develops, they can mature in a matter of seconds and have their hosts scrambling around scratching out the symbol everywhere they can. These have been used in acts of terrorism since ancient times and can successfully take out an entire city in a matter of weeks, fortunately their hosts often die from exhaustion or other body issues as their minds are consumed, they don't really need a host to live very long, just long enough to create a few more of the visual trigger. Another group that I've thought about were the Split (personality) Demons. They hijack their host's body for themselves and replicate directly from host to host, these ones are dangerous because their "offspring" are able to carry knowledge from their "parent" Demon. Some strains are so successful at this that it can be mistaken to be jumping from person to person rather than just replicating. Demon Hunters are basically what their title describes them as, people who's job is to seek out Demons and eliminate them or treat the host, this often requires a mixture of sedation and psychology for the lesser Demons while it could require the execution of the host for more dangerous ones. Basically I have a few directions that I've been thinking I could take a story in this world, one directions would be a Split Demon that wants a body of it's own rather than just playing part of it's replicating cycle, it's be about a person's right to live. Another was that there was a terrorist threat on a city about the development of a new Demon that would destroy it, we follow a Demon Hunter and his team as they try to find the Terrorist and stop him, news get out about the threat and there is a Visual Demon attack that causes death, the news starts a panic about it in the usual media way. It turns out that the new Demon was born from the fear of the terrorist attack and causes mass suicide (mindset being take your own life before the Demon can). I like this second one but I was going to have the Demon Hunter actually be a Split Demon who doesn't even realize it and that struck me as slightly Fight Club-ish. Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

Hint Taken heres my idea for a graphic novel, I uploaded concept art onto Deviantart (however it is outdated now, theres been a change in setting) Okay, the setting is an urban fantasy set in a kind of fantasy universe that has progressed to 1950's era technology. The city is the soul setting (its name hasn't been chosen), In it there is a culture clash between a American/European Capitalist Society and A Mesoamerican/ Arabic kind of selection of fantasy beings such as djinn, ghouls, marids and so on. The storyline is non-linear (kind of like pulp-fiction, its hard to explain) but basicly the events centre around a protest, than a prison riot, than a crackdown and city-wide riot and then a final state of conflict. there will be multiple characters on both sides who are both good and bad, the way they react to and cause these events is explored. the major characters are all individualistic and end up leaving the city in one way or another eventually. The basic theme is that sometimes conflict and idealism are self-perpetuating and the only way for there to be no conflict is for there to be no sides. or no alienation, whichever way you see it. The visuals will be different chapter to chapter, some will be a newspaper, others will be black and white, others will appear like an oil-painting and so on. thank god for photoshop, or this wouldn't be possible. there are at least two maor twists in the storyline so far. Also a Title, what should it be? Some Ideas are 'City of Smoke and Mirrors' or 'Polar Indigo' (though that one fit the old setting more ) Edited by seascorpion, Aug 17 2011, 04:10 PM.

I've had an idea bouncing round in my head, I don't intend to do anything with it though, so I thought I'd put it here. I'm assuming you either know about Mass Effect, or don't care so spoilers don't matter to you. It's based on what I've seen in the trailers and demos of ME3. I just can't see how the Galaxy can win against the Reapers. One reaper with a geth screen wrecked the Citadel fleet and gave Fifth fleet a thrashing, and the reaper was not even trying. There are hundreds, maybe thousands invading in ME3. All I can imagine is a few survivors, hiding on colonies that are off the records and wandering fleets, waiting for the reapers to think they have won and then rebuilding as soon as the threat is over. Then, a few thousand years later the species that survived (I don't fancy the Drell's or Raloi's chances) go after the reapers, starting with the one left behind and then moving on dark space. Liara T'Soni's granddaughter would be the main character. |

Well one of the first things they would do is cure the genophage and probably just try and throw krogan at the reapers, every world commisionned into arms manufacturing. The protheans tried hiding but remember they failed, they couldn't stay for long enough. |

That's not going to work. The Krogan are tough bastards, but the Reapers are an armada of hyper advanced dreadnoughts who've been doing this since the Eocene, probably longer. The Krogan are good warriors, and probably good soldiers too. Given how well they did in the Rachni wars and rebellions they are probably decent in space combat too but curing the genophage will not give you more ships, which is what they need. As of 2185 the Council races have 83 dreadnoughts, none of the other races could have more than 7, aside from the batarians. So, being optimistic that's probably about 150 dreadnoughts plus screen available by the time of the invasion if everyone start building now, versus hundreds of far more advanced ships. The numbers just don't add up. A technologically superior enemy with superior numbers, without mercy or compassion is almost certain to win. I can see why Saren thought working with them was the only way forward. The Protheans did not try hiding, they had no idea the reapers were coming and got slaughtered. They just happened to have a secret base where a few of them held out. |

Doubtful it would effect them the are partly organic and they almost certainly shielded. They have to have some very redundant systems, one was sill operative after for millions of years and being hit by slug that nearly tore a planet in half. I've been thinking about it and logically a virus is what makes most sense to take them down. Breaking into a reaper and planting a virus is more Shepard's style than long range space combat. Even close range "knife fights" are seen only in cutscenes. |

lamna you've probably just guessed one of the missions in the game :') it makes that much sense. Play our vast numerical advantage by just trying to get everyone to board the reapers and plant a virus. Perhaps some willingly allow themselves to become husks with the virus being carried in some sort USB connection in them? |

Trouble is, I think the reapers are all independent. At least that's the impression I got of Sovereign. They probably would not get crippled by a virus like the Geth. |

A virus would have to be highly advanced, probably multiple ones, that target the power sources and the shields. or the life support system for the organic parts of them. If one reaper was made derelict, with the organic parts dead, than the technology from it would give us some great defenses and weapons, enough to maybe even stand a decent chance if it was done quick enough. you would need to effectively have all races working as a singular force, no distinction, no coalition. even with decent weapons and troops the council will have divided aims and the reapers won't |

Well the virus the reapers used on the Geth was not big an fancy, it just messed with their maths a bit. |
