Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous.

we see it all the time in scifi, creatures that can blend seemlessly into there backgrounds, but could this ability ever actually be real? i can't help but feel like it couldn't, but i don't know.

I think the camouflaging abilities of cuttlefish already are the very limit of what is possible.

hmm...*goes to youtube and looks at this video*

it seems like it could only work on a single color background, like the open ocean, and even then there are bits that stick out.

p.s hey rick, how have you been? haven't seen you at the primeval forem.

Well, if you could change texture, shape, and color, like an octopus, you'd have near-perfect camouflage. But as for Primeval gremlin-style color changing, it's just not plausible. It would take extremely precise control, and also would only work from one angle.
