| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I dunno, I'm a big fan of most "fight to the death" things in dystopian novels. I mean, when the Roman empire was just beginnign to break down, the government provided gladiatorial entertainment to distract the masses. Basically, they provided a game where a) Christians and criminals were killed, b) gladiators slaughtered animals, and c) where gladiators killed each other. I just like to think that violent games are the hallmark of most, if not all, societies on the brink of destruction. Plus, I just think that having the government institute very violent games is a way to further their control over the masses. If they can make you kill another citizen just for the entertainment of the masses, I think that is one of the strongest forms of control a government has. |

maybe showing my age here - but - those pics from the movie (or is it a TV show?) look like just pretty face stereotype pretty (white) middle class US teens to me - those faces could be in fucking Gossip Girl or the Twillght movies ? do all teenagers look the same to me? Am I a jaded cynical old bastard? I don't think so... By the looks of it - in 5 years it will already be dated, because they've got "now" hairstyles and fashion... |

I don't remember Nazi Germany having any big fancy death-matches as they fell. Or Yugoslavia, or the USSR. Or the CSA. Or the Empire of Japan. Or the Ottoman Empire. And the gladiatorial games started soon after the defeat of Carthage (don't remember them going out in a blaze of dudes stabbing each other to cheering crowds either), and continued well after the Empire became Christian. And gladiators themselves were not often killed, they were big investments. Is that the fashion for hair today? Kinda scruffy? |

It has finally arrived. The trailer for "The Hunger Games" has arrived: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXJ9Hm2SFlg I never read past the first third of the first book in the trilogy but while the footage looks decent enough and I have faith in the filmmakers, I expected the world too look much grittier, advanced, uglier and darker and futuristic like fellow dystopias "In Time" and "Equilibrium" did. Note: Plus, I think Jennifer Lawrence looks much more attractive and natural as a blond than a brunette. |

I think the aesthetics make perfect sense, people don't like living in slums in ragged clothes. As soon as you have the security to do so people will try to improve their lives. It also matches the story's Greek inspiration, a shining civilization with a dark streak running through it. Makes me want to go buy the DVD of Kings. |

So how is it? Worth seeing? If not I'll have to repurpose this topic to get excited about the Honor Harrington film. Probably going to be made in less than a decade! http://forums.davidweber.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2255 |

So what did you guys think of the movie? I personally disliked it. Here I thought "John Carter" had an underdeveloped world and characters but "The Hunger Games" takes the cake. And there was something off with the film. It was just so...quiet. I didn't get the sense of the grandiose and I didn't like how there wasn't enough turmoil in the first hour before the games actually begin. I can't believe that the writers actually used that awful cliche where the villain brags and brags instead of killing the hero and lo and behold, the villain gets killed because she couldn't shut up! This was parodied in "Last Action Hero" (1993) for crying out loud! Edited by Yorick, May 16 2012, 10:20 PM.

I actually rathered enjoyed it, it was different for me. But I never read the books so I have no idea. The only problem was that I reckon they should have made it a little more violent and embraced a higher certifcate. Then I think it would do a better job of showing a clearly brutal society. |

But remember, you can't market an R-rated film at young adults. Books can get away with being EXTREMELY violent, but showing teenagers killing each other in a movie is a bit more taboo. |
