Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

"The Hunger Games" is a trilogy of bestselling young adult books set in a dystopian future by screenwriter-turned-novelist Suzanne Collins and is currently being adapted to the silver screen by director Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) and screenwriter Billy Ray (Shattered Glass, Flight Plan). The first book is titled "The Hunger Games" and the sequels are ''Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay."

The story is set in an unspecified year in the 22nd century. Out of the ashes of a global warming-ruined Earth rose the nation of Panem, divided into twelve districts, in what was formally North America. Panem is run by a totalitarian government known as Capitol in the Rocky Mountains. After an unsuccessful rebellion against the oppressive regime, one of the districts was completely destroyed and as a punishment, every year two teenagers from the remaining twelve districts are randomly selected to compete in the ominous Hunger Games. It is a televised event where pairs from each district fight to stay alive in a barbaric competition of survival. The protagonist, a gifted, young archer named Katiniss Everdeen, takes her little sister's place when she is selected by the lottery and becomes a symbol of hope and freedom to all of Panem as she struggles to survive the games.

Many Stephen King fans may note similarities to his early novels, as Richard Bachman, "The Running Man" (during the second Great Depression, in the not-too distant future, a poor family man enters himself in a life-or-death game show) and "The Long Walk" (in an alternate present where America is a totalitarian dictatorship, innocent young boys are randomly selected to continue walking till the last man standing) written back in the 1980s.

The film adaptation stars recent Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeeen, risings stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland.

I read the first 100 pages of the 300-plus page first book and I couldn't get into it. Author (and former screenwriter) Suzanne Collins isn't talented enough in writing prose to write a book where the information comes organically from the story and the character development was weak. I'm hoping the film adaptation is much better. It is already very well cast.

I think you should just make a topic for you to put all your media-based stuff to go, so then when you hear about a movie that has no trailers yet, or a book that you've just found out about, you can put it in there and we won't need more threads. Kinda like how I have very few threads because I know I won't need all of them.

I've heard of this book series for years actually.

Yeah. The storyline has been compared to the Stephen King novels "The Running Man" (about a desperate family man in a life-or-death game show in near-future America during the second Great Depression) and "The Long Walk" (about randomly selected young boys who are forced to walk till the last man standing by an oppressive totalitarian government that rules America in an alternate present).

Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth.

I actually really enjoyed the series. Picked up the first book on a whim (my brother had to read it for a summer reading assignment) and I wanted to see what it was about.

So, after skipping out on church one day (as I always try to do), I picked up the book and started reading. I read the whole thing in one day. That wasn't because it was short (I don't consider 300 pages short); it was because I was hooked and really enjoyed the plot/book. Suzanne Collins's writing style, while not the best I've read (Steinbeck and Huxley have her beaten by a long-shot), was gripping and engaging and did a pretty good job explaining the dystopian world her characters lived in.

Needless to say, I read the other two books and I thought they were equally as gripping, if not more so. So yeah, I'm quite excited about this movie. Granted, I don't care who is cast in what role or who is writing the movie or any of that stuff because, frankly, you could have the best people starring in/making a movie and the movie still might suck. I just want to see the movie. Period.

I generally don't care about who is in a film, I prefer actors to stars. Unless it's someone like Brian Blessed. I'd have watched Thor if he was in it.

Sorry Fakey, I just ignore you as standard procedure. I forget that sometimes you do have stuff to say. It's not a bad idea, but alas Yorick covers too many media things to condense them down into one topic.

Here are a few more pics-looks exciting- and an interview by cast member Elizabeth Banks that plays a character named Effie Trinket:

So the film is basically The Running Man + Battle Royale?

You do know that the dystopian novels "The Running Man" and "The Long Walk" by Stephen King (as Richard Bachman)-of which these books bear a close resemblance to-predate the film "Battle Royale"-unreleased in the U.S.-by whole decades?

"Death Race" (inmates compete in a televised life-or-death race track), "The Condemned" (live broadcast of convicted killers forced to compete to the last man standing on an island in 24 hours) and "Gamer" (convicts are used as puppets in a real life video game where it there is no reset button) have been released since then and bear a closer comparison to "Battle Royale" than "The Hunger Games" does.

Now that you mention it, this whole 'dystopia where people fight for their lives in a televised contest' is pretty overused by Hollywood by now.

I love a good dystopia story but after "The Hunger Games," they should give this 'demented game show' element a rest for a while.

Unless it's someone like Brian Blessed.
He's briliiant isn't he?

Without him as Augustus in the series "I Claudius" - it would have been VERY ordinary....

Have you ever watched it?

Yeah but in Battle Royale it's teens selected by the government, not crims who are doing the fighting. Aside from the odd nutter who volunteers.

And no I have not, there are a lot of things to watch and I prefer to go though shows one or two at a time.

I had an idea for a story like thad too, though at least it's not exactly dystopian. It's called "The Olympus Men," and the central character is a man who must participate in a race to the top of Olympus Mons (the highest mountain on Mars) to try to raise money to save his dying son. However, the race here is entirely for sport, and no one gets killed.

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.
