| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Could this naturally evolve? |

Well, the fluorescent protein is natural, the cell is natural, and natural mirrors are all over the place in nature. So I'd say yeah, it could . Probably it would derive from a regular bioluminescent organ, many of which include mirrors and lenses. The question is what it would use its laser for. |

Natural mirrors are found all over the place? Where! I thought that high-quality natural mirrors were quite poor. I doubt it'd be strong enough to actually fry stuff with, the intensities involved are probably too high for a biological construct. On the other hand, maybe you could evolve some sort of "dazzler". |

well, becoming cyclops from x-men may still be a little out there, but mabey this could be used so a predator can acuratly aim a shot, like a lazer sight on a gun. |

Well, lasers use a lot of power, so a "death-ray" doesn't seem plausible in an animal. However, you COULD use it as a way to accurately judge distance. As for shooting lasers from your eyes, don't. It will blind you. Permanently. |
