| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

Well, is anyone here planning on jumping ship? I personally am starting to see it as a very feasible option. mainly because of housing prices in Sydney, which are incredibly expensive ( for example, what can buy you a double-story in San Francisco won't buy you a run-down house in a bad neighbourhood in Sydney). the fact that Sydney is a culture centre for a nation, that it has a fantastic and beautiful landscape, that it has an incredibly low crime rate, has made the city so expensive to live in that it is ridiculous. Simply put, I cant afford a house here unless I ever become very succesful. a large amount of my friends have decided to move, to places like the US and Canada. I like the idea of moving to London, mainly because i already have spent almost a month living there in the past. eventually I could succesfully navigate the tube (which is a pretty good railway system) and i had the gist of Earl's court and the surrounding areas. however I also wouldn't mind San Fran, Toronto, Chicago or New York. |

YOU DIRTY LITTLE TRAITOR! Only kidding mate... I love this fucking country though... but - fortunately heaps of other world class cities have considerable plantations / street scapes of eucalyptus trees - there's nothing better than that mid-winter smell of wet rotting gum leaves! I even found it on an tiny isolated island in Greece in the early 70s - tiny little front gate to some farmers house, and there were four huge mature gum trees! Watch any Hollywood movie filmed in California, even from the first talkies - and I can detect the unmistakable profile of the foliage of gum trees, thoughout California (no doubt at the expense of indigenous flora). Sorry Seascorp, but I, along with most Australians who don't live in Sydney - hate the place! The amount of attention and government funding for Sydney things, as the "showpiece" of Australia makes me sick, and sparks that "secessionist" tendency in most West Australians. Melbourne's a better city - but it's too fucking cold and gray there (like London? I lived in Hampstead for 3 months in Jan-March 1972). Bleak. I start to go stir crazy if I go more than 3 days without seeing blue sky! I wouldn't mind living in Newcastle tho - 200 km north of Sydney, beautiful unspoilt, and not overrun with yuppies raping formerly working class inner city areas and replacing viable food and essentials shops with fucking cafes! How much fucking choice of coffee do these urbanites need? I like coffee, but they go too far... Most of the regular cafe clients wearing glasses don't even need them, they think wearing glasses makes them smart, and they aspire to Trotsky and Che Guevara, but they wouldn't know shit from clay... okay I am venting my spleen - and over generalising... but in the 1850s in Paris, Munich, London - "cafe" culture was extreme, they thought amazing thoughts and revolutionary philosophies - what will these wannabe fashion statement loving skin deep tossers ever do or achieve or CONTRIBUTE? Never enters their tiny minds to let natural use wear or put holes in their jeans! |

Seascorp move to London its great! I was up in Earls court yesterday helping my mother set up for a fashion expo. Or move to Kent actually its really nice, warmer than most of the country, rural and quiet but with decent night life. Its awesome. Kent is also only an hour away from London (its where i live by the way) |

I pissed myself laughing. anyone who knows Sydney will have a mental note of the cafe areas. like Haberfield, and Major's bay, and Burwood, and Strathfield plaza, and Summer Hill, and Dulwhich Hill, and Concord. And just about every other goddamn place in the inner-west. Yeah London was pretty nice, it was pretty funny when Londoners where complaining about the trains. partly becaus the trains in london are so much better then sydney's trains, which are covered in graffiti (except the new ones) pretty much always late (except when they're early) and sound like they're coming off the rails. The tube was awesome, except in peak hour. But I do like sydney trains, they sound like bagpipes and they look like graffiti tunnels (except the new ones), but dammit they're my trains. |

London has different sections, and the nicer suburbs (if that's what you're going for) are significantly more expensive. If you're thinking about the centre, it'll all expensive. "The average price for properties in Kensington and Chelsea is £894,000 with similar average outlay in most of Central London." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London#Districts which is... 1,369,938.18 AUD according to http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert/?Amount=894000&From=GBP&To=AUD |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!" | |

Its strange to hear foreigners praising our public transport and we generally don't think highly of it. It must be terrible in America and Australia. I've got a girlfriend in Washington (the one with all the weed and rainforest, not murder and monuments) so one of us is likely to move at some point, probably both. She like Northern Ireland and while I'd like to visit...it's always going to be the place where all the bad people with bombs and mortars come from in my mind. Plus she's keeps calling it Londonderry. I'm trying to convince her to move to Canada, which seems the ideal compromise. Ideally Vancouver island would be great but anywhere in the Rest of Canada looks good. Newfoundland or Prince Edward's would be good comprises to give us access to our families. Sometimes I think about quitting all the bullshit here and going to East or Southern Africa, but then get horribly sun-burned right here in blighty and I remember why that's such a poor idea. |

I grew up wondering why our trains got so much stick, and then i found out that people only remember negative events. |

I found out what's so bad when I went on a train and had to stand with the baggage for half the trip and was jammed against the window by a fat bastard listening to someone argue with the conductor about his tickets the rest of the way. |

Ill probably save up and work up a large enough sum of money to get/rent an apartment in a not-so-good but not-so-bad area, I will then try and get a job, probably part-time. What suburbs do you londoners recommend? |
