| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Kenetosynthesis is the word I came up with for an idea thats been kicking around in my head for a while now. Simply put it is the idea of an organism that converted mechanical energy into usable chemical energy eather in one step or more. The best example I could come up with was a "plant" that has long elastic fibers running parallel to the current so that when it sways the fibers elongate and then contract by them selves releasing energy which is then used eather to synthesize a molecule that can be metabolized to yield ATP or to directly pyrophosphate ADP. It could use water currents, tidal forces or even powerful enough wind as a source of energy. For wind and possibly for the others as well it might need to eather be photosynthetic itself or have a coral like symbiosis with an algae. Aquatic ones could also filter feed. So, questions and comments? |

Hmm.. I read about this in '' We are not alone '' by David Darling, but i'm not sure how this would evolve, or even how it would work. |

This has been explored a lot by people in other topics. Not that it isn't worth talking about, but it might help to see what's been done already so you can break new ground. |
