| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Now this is an odd new story, a Kiwi was recently found in Southern Russia, near Georgia. Nobody knows quite how it got there, or how long it had been there, other than the 3 days it was spotted wandering about. I wonder how well they would do elsewhere, or if the could establish themselves. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13344158 |

Considering how badly they are handling mammalian predation on New Zealand, elsewhere they could only thrive on islands. Maybe they could be introduced to Madagascar once it is cleansed of dogs, cats and introduced civets. |

Indeed, but if by some fluke they got somewhere isolated and relatively peaceful they could probably become established. I just though this was such a weird news story it merited discussion. |

but what about the native endemic civet? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malagasy_Civet Kiwi would have no proper defensive strategy against Madagascar's native predators, i.e. the eupleridae |

its not civet, but Euplerid, family endemic to madagascar, once it contained even a leopard-sized fossa, but it was exterminated by humans, not there is about 4 civet-like species and 6 mongoose-like species and dont forgot tenrecs, they may predate on eggs or young |

Well, kiwis are too big to be preyed upon by tenrecs. Most euplerids would probably only pose a threat to the chicks, with the fossa finding kiwis an apetizer. Maybe we should genetically engineer kiwis so they become elephant bird sized and replace their extinct malagasy cousins. |

Probably easier to clone an elephant bird itself - surely there must be some remains to extract DNA from? But what/how would you host the embryo on? We haven't yet the technlogy to clone complex organisms in a petri dish have we? Or even easier to genetically engineer an emu or cassowary into an elephant bird... |

According to my research, it's impossible to clone birds the way we clone mammals using existing technology. |

I don't know about elephant bird DNA. Is there some left? Probably, enough to clone an animal? Doubtful. Have I made a topic about the Greater rhea living in Northern Germany? |

no you werent, though, they may have enough potentional to appear in some SE projects,as they breed fast, have almost no predors, and are protected. They though inbreed (but this may be solved by new farm runaways) BTW everything i got about them is from Wikipedia

Indeed, I also see much potential for the feral emus and rheas of Eurasia. |
