Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm going back to basics.

Did anyone else get an involuntary shudder when they read man after man or nemo ramjet's all tomorrows?

I know I sure did. There was just something about those two books that unsettles me.

Or do I just have a weak constitution?

I found it floating round on the tubes, and downloaded it immediately. Your reaction alone was worth it.

That lovely little snippet surpasses any post-human fiction I've read in terms of bodily horror and overall depressant.

Apparently it was a standalone short story in some sort collection of similarly depressing things. I'll look around for any more info.

EDIT: I seem to have found it here. Along with some weird...stuff.

Welll... it's very unlikely. The human skeleton couldn't be that small. Otherwise the human would be just a little bit of fleshy splodge on the floor.

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Stephen Baxter's Evolution didn't freak me out much. I still can't figure out why. It has all the elements right there...

I guess I empathised with the tree too much.

Looking at this guy's other stuff isn't as freaky, but it's far, far weirder.

Very odd, but did not seem that horrifying. You'd not be able to get though one book of Franken Fran.

I found the mole-rat people in Evolution kind of freaky.

I've read all of Franken Fran, and only vomited twice a chapter.

I personally found the mole people absolutely adorable. I was more disquieted by the Coalescences from his Destiny's Children series.

As far as I remember that thing did happen. I remember the same feeling when getting to the end of Evolution.
