Did anyone else get an involuntary shudder when they read man after man or nemo ramjet's all tomorrows? I know I sure did. There was just something about those two books that unsettles me. Or do I just have a weak constitution?

(I hope the Mormon and the Muslim ships did not succeed) Ah, the religion-specific ships ... I always thought that was an interesting concept. How would a 'mono-religion' society evolve? I figure the fanatical elements would disappear, because there would be no other religions to push back against. I figure it would become very pleasant, and probably last longer than, say, Thalassa -- I imagine it was supposed to be pleasant, but I'd hate to live there, it seems so boring. And the end of the book hints that they needed the help of that Martian criminal to deal with a bunch of stone-age crabs! The first little ice age or meteor is going to be the end for them... they'll be far too soft to adapt.

One person would paint Joseph smith with blond hair, 30 year later you will have 2 totally different superstitions at each others throats. There would be a good chance that superstition. would retard their progress technologically. And then there is the possibility the might throw of the shackles of superstition. Thalassa does seem like it might fail, sound like a nice place to live, but the people are not trying hard enough, the presidential yacht is only painted on one side, and nobody bothered to rebuild the radio station. Perhaps it is because of the small population, or without sexual competition, advancements stop.

Possibly; but possibly not. It depends on how settling a new world, with no other human contact, would affect a society's development. We don't have any examples, really; even the settlers of America and Australia were still subject to the home country's laws. I tend to think that such a society would develop in significantly different ways from any we know on Earth. I'm not convinced that schisms and the like would happen (as people might feel the need to pull together as this small group is the only humans around), or if they happened, would lead to violence simply because there would be so much room to spread.
