| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! In the year 100 million in the antarctic forest there was a plant that produced a chemical that was harvested by some birds for defense.Sow what if some type of plant produced a type of chemical that would be similar to a Ice breath. |

Canis, what if the animal had the ice chambers surrounds by bone, that way, they can resist the cold. |

Dark Matter: *facepalms self* Now I remember! Fakey: How does bone help resist the cold? It's just a support structure. And even if the bone was filled with loads and loads of insulationary marrow, that marrow would freeze as the creature went to use its ice breath, leading to the death of the creature. |

NH3NO might work. As a solution to Canis's problem - the solution only mixes a reasonable distance from the subject's spraying glands, so the endothermic reaction takes place nowhere near them. |

An alternative would be a polar animal with a fire breath whose chemical reactions required to produce it would make blue flames instead of regular golden/orange ones. It would not be an ice breath, but unexperienced trvallers would mistake it for one |

"i can't beleve it's not ice breath!" anyway, this all seems possible, but it leads back to the question of how cold dose this get? if it just makes water cold, then it is of almost no use. |

stop the presses! i just had a double post worthy idea! have you ever seen that mythbusters episode on blue ice? if you haven't, here is the episode with a clip of there test (you have to look a little, but it's there.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kCjzv6BSnM&feature=related that could be the answer. a high altatude flier that sprays water on it's prey, freezing it and letting it's fall to the ground and melt, then eat it at it's leasure. so, what do you think? (also, see the rest of the episode, it's really cool...pun not intended, but very punny). p.s. now that i think of it, if you see that whole episode, that pun isn't the most effective. a better fit would be some lerics. your hot and your cold, your yes and your no, your in and your out, your up and your down... it should make sence by the end. i think. Canis, If the bones are filled with hot blood... ... ... ... ... ... ... I'VE GOT IT! Combine the cold air method Holben described, with my 6-chamber heart, and 4-lunged animal, and we've got something that can store air for hunting, a pair of lungs for breathing while it uses the ice breath, and a large heart to superheat the bones, as well as keep it warm in a climate that has winters. |

The question here isn't the how, but the why? Why would an animal evolve ice breath? It just seems overly complicated. I mean, claws and teeth work just fine. |

A creature could evolve ice breath to paralyze prey or keep it fresh |

Yes, but this variety is just way too overly complicated to actually be useful. Fakey, no. Just no. If you know anything about evolution at all, you know that prey will try to evolve some way to avoid being eaten and that predators will evolve some way to eat them despite their avoidance manuevers. So that worm analogy doesn't work. |
