Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I hope it has become less lethal in its crossing of the sea.

I thought the plant was only leaking alpha radiation for the moment?

It's not going to kill you.
Japan's pretty far away, for a start.

Take Chernobyl. The radiation cloud covered the whole of Europe, but there was no significant increase in cancer rates.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

It's not far from Korea.

But I doubt it's very dangerous. Just makes a good news story.

It is on the other end of Japan, across a mountain range, passed the ocean, and the winds go the other way.

From Korea? It's only 120 miles away, that's about the distance across the English Channel (not counting the Strait of Dover).
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

120 miles is a long way, for a cloud, and the isotopes in the air are diffusing in all directions.
You really have to within a few miles for a fatal dose.

Yeah, there's going to be enough dispersion before it reaches Korea that you're likely only going to have a slight increase in background radiation, nothing significant enough to be noteworthy. If you're really worried, I'd just advise staying indoors - the structure of a dwelling will defuse enough unless your house is literally made of paper.

I was watching the news today and the radiation has spread as far as here, in Kansas. It may be a negligible dose, but you're telling me that a higher one wouldn't make it to Korea if a low one could make it to the center of North America?

Your local news team is parroting stupid. Even in the jet stream it wouldn't get there.

I hope american news channels didn't start parroting CNN now that Glenn has left. Not that it would make sense if they started doing that anyway.

But it is 1,000 miles away. It wouldn't.

Whatever happens the radiation is harmless.

Alpha radiation: The most dangerous form. Cannot even pass through a sheet of paper nor travel more than 3m

Beta radiation: Will be stopped by concrete and anything stronger. I.E wont get out of the power station.

Gamma Radiation: Cannot be truly stopped although can be weakened sufficiently. They are used in X ray machines, and i read somewhere that the dosage that we will actually receive if it gets here is going to 1/233 of the stregnth of a weak Xray. So no need to panic really.
