| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! So I stumbled across this thing called Grandroids. This guy, Steve Grand, created a game called Creatures which focused around creatures called Norms. The Norms were different from other artificial intelligences, they were actual artificial organisms. They were programmed from the DNA up, featuring simulated biochemistries and brain networks. They could literally learn new things both on their own and through teaching. They could be bred into new breeds or even evolve naturally through artificial selection. The interesting thing was that this was all totally random, no external parameters or hard coded prerequisites; the simulated genetics works like real genetics. Now he's planning on making a game called Grandroids, which will feature alien organisms and alien ecosystems using the same kind of "From the Genes Up" simulation. It's merely to watch, it won't be like Spore at all. If a creature evolves, it won't be over a single generation and it won't be because it gained enough DNA points to purchase a new body part it found. They change realistically from environmental pressures. They're really intricate and detailed too, they can even get realistically sick if something in the environment upsets their simulated biochemistry. He's also hinted at putting sentient creatures into the game, ones that can learn things on their own and even come up with new ideas using a simulated imagination (seriously). I don't know how that will turn out, but hopefully it will be better than Spore. I'm excited to see where this project goes. He's doing it independently, so a big corporation can't ruin his vision. He's already received twice the amount of donations he's asked for via donations, so I doubt funding will be an issue. I just thought our community should keep tabs on this and show it some support. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Really? Does nobody have anything to say about the self-aware computer programs that think they're animals? Nobody on the Speculative Evolution website has no input whatsoever on a virtual alien ecosystem that evolves in a realistic manner using simulated biology and genetics? |

Well I wasn't able gain much info besides what you showed from that link about the game itself but it's still in developement so that figures. It does sound very cool though especially if it is from the creatures guy, I've read alot about those games. |

Sounds interesting, but there isn't much there to talk about yet. |
