| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Has anyone considered that it might be an Aardvark? |

Thing is, the snout is different from their depictions of jackals (compare with Anubis). It is closer indeed to elephant shrew snouts. It could indeed be an aardvark though. Or a time travelling Lepictidium. |

Have you ever heard of the J'ba Fofi? It's supposed to be this gigantic (read: five-foot-across) spider that lives in the Cryptid Capital of the World: the Congo. There haven't been many sightings and I'm more than a little skeptical, mostly because spiders, even though they have book lungs allowing them to grow larger than contemporary insects, can't support their own weight at such sizes. What else could this animal be? |

i remember too that i saw somewhere that mongolian tribes talked about a black beast or something, the description they gave to europeans was similar to that of the extinct Elasmotherium.... other criptid that has come recently are the Ningen....Japanese Whalers said that they saw some giant white beasts when hunting near antarctica (but its more than a fictional stuff)... also dont forget the bloop, and the other strange oceanic sounds that where received by the NOAA's hydrophones in 1997..... |

The Bloop was made into a movie, <Cloverfield>. The Set's beast, I'm a bit skeptical about the okapi thing. It resembles an Aadvark or Elephant Shrew, as Johnfaa said. Could it be a new species of large afrothere? And the creature looks a bit different from jackals.... And FW, you can tell the differences when ancient people are drawing real animals or made-up animals. In the case of the Set's Beast and Sirrush, I think it's highly likely they drew real creatures, maybe not creatures the artists actually saw, but real existing creatures nontheless. Speaking of the Sirrush, I think it's highly likely that the creature exists, and I have reason to believe that the Mokele Mbembe, the Sirrush and possibly the Behemoth is the same creature. I think it's quite possible it could be an undiscovered species of pachyderm or other large extinct mammals such as Indricotheres or Chalicotheres. (One thing I wanted to ask Dial was, he has a chalicothere named 'Behemoth' in ASF. Did you by any chance have that in mind?) Other Cryptids I'm interested in besides sea serpents, the set's beast and the sirrush is are large carnivorous cryptozoological mammals, the Onza, the Mngwa, the Wampus Cat, the Nandi Bear, the Shunka Warakin and the others. I'm pretty sure that there could be a new species among them, although various feline cryptids may actually be hybrids/subspecies/mutations of already known species. And the Nandi Bear and Shunka Warakin may be hyenas, specifically the Short-Faced Hyena and the American Hyena. And I'm highly skeptical about the Giant Spider cryptid. It's just... OH, and the Ningen! White 20~30 meter whale like sea creatures with flat, humanoid faces..... |

Opposite to me. I look like a nerd at first but im actually less nerdy than it looks. Unless i am wearing my contacts! They shouldn't be shattered. Maybe Nessie wasn't hungry. Or maybe she is nice. Or maybe she thinks you would taste bad. HEHEHEHEHEHEHEH i should watch cloverfield. Isn't the sirrush a dragon thing? |

Well, it is depicted as a dragon, but chances are it isn't anything reptilian but a mammal, considering it's mammalian gait and stance. And Cloverfield isn't a bad movie. I like how they depicted the giant monster, the creature's design, how they made the movie seem like if you were in an actual monster attack. And I highly doubt that an undiscovered species of large animal exists in Loch Ness. I think it's mostly composed of hoaxes, unconfirmed rumors, hysteria, misidentification of usual objects or known animals. But there are always possibilities... How would a big amphibian survive in Loch Ness? Isn't it too cold for them? Also, how could an amphibian be mistaken for a five-foot spider? |

That and there's no way all these pictures and stories are of plediosaurs or similar marine reptiles. They're always shown (or said) to have their head sticking out of the water, but in reality they couldn't lift their head up at all. The long neck was to ambush fish from below, not stick it out and have a look around. The neck wouldn't have supported such a large, heavy head. So either people are making up the Loch Ness monster or it's something that's not a dinosaur. Personally I think a lot of cryptid sightings are based in truth. It's certainly possible there are some form of bipedal apes living in the Himilayas and North America, but if they've eluded discovery for this long their numbers are probably so few that they won't be around for much longer (if they aren't extinct already). The giant squid used to be a cryptid, but now it's just a fact of life. Same thing with the okapi. I do think it is certainly possible some dinosaurs have survived to this day, as I find it a little hard to believe that an asteroid impact wiped out all of some of the most evolutionarily successful organisms ever to walk the Earth. But do I actually think there are? No. I keep an open mind about cryptids, but until one of them is in a cage on the news I'll be doubtful. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself
