Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

What do you guys think of cryptids such as the Mapinguary and the Death Worms?
I do art sometimes.

Projects:
Amammalia: A strange place where mammals didn't make it and the land is, once again, dominated by archosaurs.

Oceanus: An endless sea dotted with islands, reefs, and black holes. Literally endless, literal black holes.

Sea serpents- I am 100% certain there ARE new pinnipeds and cetaceans out there, and since swan-necked seals did indeed exist, I support the long-necked seal theory. Otherwise they are all misidentified large fish, sea turtles and already known cetaceans.

Mapinguari- I do think that a ground sloth COULD have survived....

Yeah. I just saw something that a mapinguari eyewitness was shown a pic of a ground sloth and said that is what he was attacked by and that Anteaters and Tree Sloths had the right arms but not body.

Sea serpents could definitly exist, also see oarfish, and maybe giant viperfiah for glowing leviathans.

Sea serpents should be either cetaceans or large fish, both misidentified and new species. The possibilities of a Mesozoic sea reptile surviving to present day is very unbelievable. Although I suppose that it could be something like a giant sea snake or crocodile, actually there were sea crocodile reports, but it's very doubtable.

And then again, the Mapinguari could be nothing but a folkoric memory of the ground sloths the first South Americans encountered, as the Bunyip is probably a folkloric memory of Marsupial Ground Sloths and Diprotodonts. Or a misidentification of South American bears. Although there are good chances that ground sloths could survive, and I rather hope they did.

Another interesting cryptozoological phenomenon is the Mothman. I think it's no coincidence that the eyes of herons glow red in the dark when they feel threatened or when they are mating.... Or it's just mass hysteria, or a combination of both, which is highly likely, added up with misidentifications of large birds in the dark.

And I also think that a large unidentified land animal does exist in Africa. Ancient records match together, and it leads to the conclusion that a large land mammal lives in central Africa, the Sirrush, the Mokele Mbembe and Behemoth all the same creature.

Personally, I think the lot of them urban legends to attract tourists, but fun to make spec projects about anyway.

Yeah, I think almost all of the alleged 'lake monsters' add up to a hoax to draw in tourists. I mean the Baekdu Mountain Cheonji monster, it's a hoax by North Korea and China to draw in tourists and get money. They're apples.

Mongolian Death Worm?

Seriously though, I used to love Cryptids. Cryptozoology.com was the first forum I really joined, though as time went on I lost interest, most seem pretty unlikely.

Ground Sloths lived on a lot longer than than most people realise, in the Caribbean they lived alongside people for over a millennium and some people have speculated that some might have clung on until the Spanish arrived.

But a large ground sloth alive today seems pretty unlikely to me, not impossible but I seriously doubt it.

It could be a smaller species. In NA there were species that were very small, even just the size of a large dog.
