| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Ain't gonna do nothing. Especially because: - There's no reason to launch a spy satellite on a Saturn V, it's far too large... you want one of the Titan series of boosters, operated by the air force... the kind of people that would be launching spy satellites at any rate. - Likewise, Titan boosters would be far better suited to launching space probes, and they did launch many early space probes, including the iconic Voyager spacecraft. - To put it into perspective, the Saturn V is impractical because it's so damn big. Using a Saturn V to launch a spy satellite would be like using an Antonov-225 to haul the payload of an Ilyusin Il-76 (in fact, the comparative payload ratios are remarkably similar). Titan at the time was the foremost 'medium' booster, Saturn V was too big and grand for anything other than a Moonshot (or launching really heavy payloads, like Skylab). The Space Shuttle was to perform the medium lift capability at a far reduced cost, but we all know how that turned out. Remarkably, the shuttle launch infrastructure (boosters, external tank, pad handling, stacking, etc) was a major cost improvement over Saturn, it's just because of the maintainance issues with the Orbiter vehicle that it cost so much. Saturn was a really costly beast even for what it did, let alone for launching payloads it isn't needed for. - Presumably you could use a premise for some high-mass, highly capable interplanetary space probe (see the 'Grand Tour' concept, which was eventually developed and castrated into the Voyager program, which essentially did become the Grand Tour), but the problem is: People will eventually want to see the fruits of this space probe's capability, and they will not be easy to hoax- especially not with Soviet scientists watching. - Launching a payload like a space station, satellite or space probe only requires a protective cover over the payload (a fairing, which splits apart and falls off the vehicle once it is above most of the atmosphere), whereas an Apollo mission stack only required a protective fairing (SLA) over the Lunar Module. The Service Module of the main spacecraft was exposed for all to see, and the Command Module (the actual habitable capsule that housed the astronauts and splashed down in the Pacific) was covered by a LES, or Launch Escape System tower, which housed rockets that would pull the crew capsule off the booster in the event of a failure on the pad or in the first phase of launch (the Shuttle does not have this capability, which is why the first two minutes of launch- before a launch abort can be performed- are worrying). - Furthermore there are not only literally thousands of people who work on the Saturn V rocket itself, constructing, assembling and preparing it for launch, but also thousands of people that work not only constructing the actual lunar hardware (the CSM and the LM), but who work training the astronauts for their mission. It would be impossible to shut all these people up- something Moon hoax proponents also fail to realise.
Really? There are many, I think, even if there are many that are smarter than that... I once had an argument with a Edited by T.Neo, Mar 28 2011, 07:41 AM.

The chap who makes the Godzilla films said that after the 50th anniversary one in 2004 that the franchise is going to be retired for a decade, but we'll probably see new films in 2014 onwards. This one will be a American made one, but it's going to be very different from the 1998 Zilla (which I quite liked myself), though the King himself will be CGI. I wonder if they will do motion capture? I think it will be Hollywood's new favourite, the gritty reboot. I never said launch a spy satellite, I said leak a story about it. It doesn't really matter, space missions fail all the time. The mission was a deep space probe or the first module of a space station that failed, or so you tell the public, but you leak stories about spy satellites, nuclear missile platforms, experimental space fighters, orbital mind control bases. A secret moon mission might get lost in all the conspiracies. Keeping people shut up who worked on it would be the hardest part, second to getting the Soviets to keep quiet about it. However as it's going to be a found footage type film, it's clear that the cover story does not work forever. Maybe it becomes an open secret, like the Israeli nuclear program. I never assume that any fiction takes place in our world. It's all alternate history to some degree, because the people in fiction either did not exist or did not do the things that they do in fiction. For example, crime scene investigators don't really act like they do in the CSI, because the CSI universe is not our world. It's my own version of "It's just a show, I should really just relax." and it's fun to speculate on how the world ended up like it did in that fiction. Speaking of CSI, have you heard that they are going to make a CSI movie? I fascinated to just see what on earth it's going to be about. Also William Petersen should be in it, so there is that. I am still unconvinced... remember... most of the public stuff is what goes on before a launch, leading up to it... not about some failed space probe that actually went to the Moon because it actually had an inexplicable Command And Service module attached to the front. Conspiracies are one thing, but people are not morons. They will figure it out, eventually... it might be treated as a particular conspiracy, but if it actually makes sense, people will buy into it- especially reputable people. If the conspiracy story is more plausible than the official story, the officials are officially buggered...
To be honest it is orders of magnitude more difficult than getting the Soviets to shut up about it. And that is really saying something. Open secret, sure, they never released the Moon footage or telemetry or anything... maybe it is just declassified footage, but that only marginally makes more sense. And if the astronauts died (from Xenomorph induced injuries or moonspider-bites), you will have to explain that too. Which will be pretty damn hard, and losing astronauts on a Moon mission is a geopolitical disaster. Essentially, the whole thing becomes one whole huge dark mark on US history and NASA history, and is probably not something that they would recover fully from for a very, very long time.
Well, sure: my problem is: this does not make sense, in our reality, in an alternate fictional reality, in anywhere. The premise of a 'classified' Saturn V mission is total and utter rubbish, whichever way you intend to spin it... you will have better luck growing Bannanas at Amundsen station in winter than you will staging a 'classified' launch of one of the most powerful singular vehicles in human history. |
