Woah there... be nice. You aren't listening to me at all. You choose not to. From where I stand, I can equate your actions with "sprouting nonsense". Excuse me for being 'jealous' about almost EVERY single alien visitation film EVER being set in the US and NOWHERE else. The rest of the world exists, y'know, and we constantly have to be subjected to people from the USA going around claiming that the US is absolutely everything in existence and we're just 'unimportant' "foreign" people. Sorry. This is not paranoia. It is also not the view of every single US citizen. But it is prevalent enough to be annoying.
Of course I know what you mean, and it doesn't make sense at all. If you had a really worthwhile story, you could very well set it in a blank 3D space- and I'm being totally serious about that.
Who are these people? Have they all been lobotomised or something? Sorry... 90% of the people I can see going to a cinema would be disgusted by someone making out with a catfish... the other 10% would have some sort of fetish about it...
If you want to call me paranoid and jealous, I can call you totally incapable of having an original thought. It is only fair, if things have devolved into name-calling. It is not a trivial matter. I just think that you don't notice it as much because you live in the US yourself. And that is completely understandable.
If you want me to act paranoid, I can... I can come up with tons of material on the CHEMTRAILS that the GOVERNMENT is USING to DISRUPT your MENTAL FACULTIES. People should wear TINFOIL helmets to protect against the brainwave ALTERING pheremones of the REPTILIAN overlords (also known as Queen Elizabeth and George Bush). See? That is paranoid. What I am saying in regards to the insistent setting of films in the US and the fact that this is influenced by US views is not paranoid.
You know what? Life is not about being alive. It is about living. And part of living is thinking and originating and designing. If you don't care about the aliens, it shows you don't really care about anything. You don't care about making a good film, either. You also don't care about making anything original or actually putting effort into designing a story or anything else for that matter, it seems. I honestly don't see how that and writing a story are mutually compatable.
It is insane reasoning only if your reasoning is insane. My point is that all these past examples you give actually make your situation worse because they increase the cliche-ness, not decrease it.
Wrong. Ain't nothing better than to dispell a nonsense notion of biology in the public view.
Really? If you say so, sure, why not? ![]()
I can tell you now that it will be told badly, because it is written badly. If it is ever accepted by anyone, they will use it as a cinematic 'dumping ground', where they can make a bit of money in the film-showing off-months. The best directors? The best actors? They would do such a film only for the money, to be honest. Which I doubt there will be much of since producers likely wouldn't give this film that large a budget.
"Superhero alien kid comes to Earth, gets hunted down by evil guys (with love interest)". Scintillating stuff.
Wrong. Every good story contains a philosophy lesson of some sort. Also do not underestimate the potential for philosophy lessons to be entertaining... If it is not, as you call it, "elitism", then it is likely cinematic rubbish.
You know, everyone has a right to dislike a story. But people don't really have a right to be ignorant about it. For example, I would not say that I found Avatar exceptional. But I will not call it a downright bad film because it simply isn't one.
Old? My Name is Earl is quite recent... besides, I was not calling it unoriginal because it sounded like the title of a TV show, I was just stating that it is familiar and that's what I initially thought of when I read it.
I think you're smarter than to cotton on to Yorick's confusion of tropes and cliches, lamna. ![]()

Now that I've got my thoughts together, I can comment on this without putting down alien movies. Yorick's Script: I watched this movie when I was a kid. It was Pocahontas. I believe they already ripped it off, Avatar by James Cameron. Canis' Script: It sounds like a bad soap opera from Lifetime. But hey, here's an original idea! Little creatures fight to the death and change and grow! This would be an Rp- WHAT DO YOU MEAN GAMEFREAK ALREADY DID THIS? Who? Deeegeeemun? The hell is that? It sounds like the same damn thing. Guess I'll try and make a game about a porcupine. |

![]() Oh, Avatar is so totally a ripoff of Pocahontas. But it manages to be worthwhile because it manages to bring in some new concepts, has very in-depth development, and in general, because it's made by James Cameron.
Sorry, that's that... blue... porcupine... video game guy thing. For an original idea, how about a spacecraft with wings, that is lifted into orbit by big fireworks and a huge orange themos bottle? It can have doors that open outwards and a space-crane-arm to lift satellites and space station parts and stuff out into space. Darn you NASA, darn you...

Hey Yorick why not go somewhere very few go. Greek Myths! They are awesome, monsters, babes, explosions. Just don't let michael Bay near them! On that thought how about a much darker telling of the Greek Myths, like what Christopher Nolan did for Batman i will do for greek myths. How does that sound? |

in my opinion it's not so much a problem that all these invasions and whatnot happen in the us, but the fact that it's always certain places in the us. The us is a very big and diverse country, probably in the top five with regards to bigness and diversityness. There are so many beautiful and unique places within it, and yet filmmakers insist on always setting the story in either new york or california. The media has a habit of simplifying us culture into one thing or the other. Try setting the stage somewhere people haven't been before. One of the reasons I loved Napoleon Dynamite was because it took place in Idaho. I mean, other than napoleon dynamite, what happens in idaho? I'm thinking a good place for the story to be set would be up north in one of those states where you can't tell if you're in canada or not, and in some small made-up town. All the stores will be family-run, meaning the alien guy will actually have to get to know people and interact in a more intimate way with humans. Also, with the love interest, if it takes place in la, you gotta admit, everybody's just gonna think "oh there goes another horny california young couple". But if it's a small town, you have the opportunity for them to go fishing or hunting together, and they can tell eachother stories under the rural moonlight. She can tell some made-up folktale about some local legend that coincidentally coincides with his story in some way, either through synecdoche, or by suggesting the aliens made contact with local indian tribes hundreds of years ago. Perhaps the aliens are real chummy with the aliens and half of the indians are really aliens in disguise, and that's why it was the place chosen for him to stay at. Then maybe she tells him that she has a theory that some people are aliens, he feels all guilty or something and runs away because he felt like he's lying to her by not showing her his true form. then also, when the alien general comes along, it'll be a lot scarier, because in la it's all safe and suburban, but in those forests up north, you can get lost in the wilderness, and people can kill you and it'll take days for people to realize you're missing, let alone find the killer. So, when the general comes along, he can just rip apart the small defenseless town and whatnot. I'm probably not being very clear about this all, but it was kind of written in a rush, so tl;dr: i suggest you contemplate the story taking place in some unpopular state up-north. maybe mississippi, because of all the lakes |

Yeah... to be honest... that is one of my annoyances as well. Not only is it ALWAYS the US, it's ALWAYS New York or LA. ALWAYS. Apparently filmmakers are not only so unoriginal that they can't set a film outside the US, they can't even set a film anywhere outside of LA and New York!
Hunting together? I'm not trying to sound like some sort of anti-hunting activist, but I've always imagined hunting as some sort of male pride activity, rather than something romantic... |

dialforthedevil: Not my cup of tea personally, but worth doing, if it is really well done, it could be quite successful.
The nicer bits of Africa? What the hell is Africa gonna do to you? Defeat you by starving to death? Nukes are better than lasers. This is because nukes contain all their energy internally and destroy themselves by the very manner in which they operate, lasers have to get their power from some sort of generator and survive for hundreds of shots. Mind you... if you were an alien overlord, why would you nuke everything? I can think of far better things to do as an alien overlord.
Yep... stalking, killing and skinning/gutting cute little animals... every girl's fantasy...

The killing and skinning is a fairly small portion of it, and I know lots of girls who would love it. Dunno what kind of pansy ass chicks you know... As for Greek Myth, I'm with T.Neo, not my thing, rape makes me sick, murder too, but if done well they could probably be rather successful movies. |

T Neo- Sarah Palin likes killing and skinning ![]() Ah i would mainly just stick to the myths as true as possible and keep all of it.... even if that does mean rape. The Greek myths arent meant for little kids anyway so why do films do that! Also i would like to show how the Gods were meant to be flawed and squabbling. Plus perhaps get weta to make the creatures |

Have you even seen a Marvel Comics movie? Those things were set in New York because that's where the comics took place. And speaking of the U.S., why does Teletoon, a Canadian network, think Johnny Test is a good idea? Do they even know what the fuck they were thinking when they put a temperate small town smack dab in the middle of Texas? |

Ok... on second thought, I do know some women who have been hunting, and liked it. That doesn't mean there isn't a huge amount of hippie-pansy-PETA-MORON people out there that absolutely hate hunting. I'm not much of a fan of hunting myself, if it's for fun/sport/manly pride I don't really buy into it, especially with the utterly huge amount of equipment that's designed to practically do all the work for you (which pretty much defeats the purpose; if you really want to reveal your manly pride, do it like your ancestors did, in a loincloth with a stone tool- that you made yourself stuck to the end of a stick. Can't get any manlier than that). If you're, I dunno... making biltong out of it though, I can see it as being worthwhile. Though personally I don't buy into killing African megafauna (or really any vulnerable megafauna, but African ones particularly, I guess, just because of geographical pride). And if you want to make trophies out of elephants... well, you do not have my sympathy.
I hate Sarah Palin. She is on a par in terms of political quality, with most African despots.
Which brings the question: Why were all the comics set in New York? ![]() Rape is bad, but rape in film is not bad, especially if you treat it realistically and take the emotional destructivity seriously. |
