| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. So I'm working on a storyboard for a comic starring my Brainstars, because I need to practice drawing and I can add color and flair with the Wacom tablet I got for Christmas. Right now I have a rough sketch I might upload as a kind of teaser, just to see what others think of it so far. Originally my idea was for a short story, just a little comic so I could be nostalgic about the good old days (I used to draw lots of comics in class when I was in middle school), but I've had an idea in my head for a while. With so many original species in the Habitable Zone, I thought it might be cool to do a Star Trek style webcomic showing off everybody's brain-children and giving everyone a chance to see them in action. I've been reading a bunch of these Star Trek comics I found on the internet, lots of them are you standard "monster of the week" stories but a few of them mixed information and entertainment. These "Alien Spotlight" comics had stories centered around specific species in the Star Trek universe, going more depth into their culture and history than the shows ever did. Doing a similar series might get the ball rolling and give us ideas for regular comics, which might increase our publicity. Or at least bring in new members every once and a while. Either way, I want to do it because I have nothing better to do. There's a couple problems though, namely that I can't draw people. I can use Photoshop and Google Sketchup to make space scenes and backgrounds, as well as add color and details, and I can draw many things well enough, but I'm still pretty limited. I know quite a few people on this forum are good a drawing, and some of you may have other talents that could help that we might not know about. So if anybody thinks they can help, consider this a community project. What do you guys think? Could Spec Trek be a hit? |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

I'd be interested. What year would this be set in? I might be willing to contribute the Silent (yes, they do already play considerable roles in the RECON RP, I know that). But depending on what year this is set in, they may advance into a space-faring race. Some could become members of the Spec Trek team, others could harass the Spec Trek team. Oh, and we could possibly get a sapient from Nereus (you'd have to talk with Empy. It would probably be a rising civilization) or the sapient Empy is developing for Charybdis. |

Sure, the point is to show off plausible aliens in a manner that is exciting rather than entirely intellectual. All these TV shows seem to think that we need to have aliens we can relate to, people in rubber costumes. This should show that even beings that are very different will be like us in some way, but still have their differences. Plus I think it will be fun. As for what year, I guess everybody who wants their species included will have to discuss it. If they're all going to be living in the same galaxy... |

Hmmm...how about somewhere in the 25th century? If I'm to include the Silent at an advanced enough level, they'll need about 300 years to effectively reverse engineer first and second colony technology and become major galactic players. Or what we could do with the Silent, if you guys want this set closer to our time (like in the 22nd or 23rd century), is have the Spec Trek land on Nod and, because of all the RECON-induced Human interaction, introduce the Silent to advanced technology. |

Henry you dick! Mr. Hands "Am I boring? Depends, do you like watching documentaries about 19th and 18th century warfare, having complicated feelings about bismark and crying over the film of winston churchill putting flowers on FDR's grave. If so then I'm so fucking boring. " | |

I was thinking something more like 34th Century. At least that's around the time most of the stories and ideas in my little universe take place. I chose it because it gives humans a sufficient amount of time to develop more advanced technologies. 25th Century would probably have FTL travel as relatively new, like how the car is still a relatively new invention (just now becoming a major part of human society like horses were for thousands of years). Its range would be limited, but by the 34th Century FTL travel would be nothing new. People would have been exploring the galaxy for centuries by that time, and the local area around Sol would be well known to humanity as a result. Plus it gives sufficient time for early terraforming projects to finish, such as on Mars and Venus. Many small moons, like those around Jupiter and Saturn too, since they could be terraformed completely in only a few centuries. I can't say much for other members species, but the Brainstars (which I'm thinking about calling just plain Priapans from now on) aren't on a timeline all that different from humans. Their homeworld is almost the same age, and their civilization is only 3000 years old (but they've had about the same number of generations, I don't think I've ever mentioned that their lifespan is only about 30 human years, 40 if they're in peak health). But that's not true for them all, the Harchep (which I will make a comic about next if this first one turns out good) are much older, coming from a planet twice as old as Earth and a civilization that has been around for 1.6 million Earth years. And I'm also working on an idea for a civilization that's almost like a cross between the Borg and the Geth; a civilization that long ago used computerization to transcend their biology and become a hivemind. Their observation drones are a common sight throughout the galaxy, as their main directive is to acquire data on everything. The exact age of their civilization is unknown, but their historical records (they make all their information available to all intelligent beings) go back at least two billion years. Some believe they may even have been the first intelligence in the Milky Way, but nobody can ever know for sure. My point is that since the comic won't center around humans, getting a time frame might be more difficult than indicating a century. |

I'm happy for them to visit the Ahura Mazda system (perhaps using a different name ? chrysafenios? ) My timeline is about 12,000 years in the future. A casual visit to the water planet known as Zarathustra or Pytheas under another name in 34th Century CE. brahxiurohomizi cong - clever crab men, the crab people sagxalimaka zhe - sapient star slug, "star slug" obviously won't be using the esperanto / simplified chinese "scientific" names for the beasts. The sapient star slug were capable of interstellar travel millions of years ago... they have surface based colonies/cities on floating islands - these cities are "conglomerates" of dodecaplexes (120 cell), some cells they keep full of water - they have menageries of different organisms in their surface "cities". They have a major city on one of the islands (or perhaps on the possible one single solid landmass on the planet?) which has a "space" elevator. They have visited Earth in the past, and they have homo sapiens neanderthalis and homo sapiens sapiens inmates in their menageries. I have been tossing up whether or not they have pre-sapient feathered theropods in their collections as well. They only have intelligent or sapient organisms in their menageries - so there could be other Habitable Zone critters in their collection. Anyway - they end up using their human "pets" as slave-soldiers in their wars with the crab people. Hey Admirable Parasky, what size is your Wacom? I have a 7 year old 6x8 USB - it's okay - and still works (so expect years of service from yours) - but I am hanging out till Cintiqs come down in price, using a tablet is better than the "drawing with a cake of soap" analogy when drawing with a mouse, but it's still no where near as intuitive as drawing "directly" onto paper (or a hi-res touch screen with a stylus). I have an Intuos4, also 8x6. I've got the space scenes done and the first couple panes of the comic (the space scenes). I've also begun drawing the other panes, but I sont have a fine point pen to ink them. I'm only using the tablet to add color and shading. |

Can I include Brainstars in the Starslug's menageries of sapients ? And does my idea of the starslugs having "pre" sapient feathered theropods in their menageries sound plausible? i.e. some isolated but very advanced species (that never fossilized) of feathered theropod that is probably more intelligent than crows and African grey parrots or kia - and being terrestrial is on the verge of sophisticated tool use, and developing sophisticated language skills, and complex but small scale societies?
