| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Hey, folks. Thought I'd just put this silly little thought out here, cuz I thought you'd all get a kick out of it. Ok, so in case you don't know, I'm writing this little Warhammer Fanfiction involving a Chaos Marine traveling to different worlds. And it got me thinking about an interesting idea. In my fanfiction, my character encounters the concept of a planet class he labels "Alt-Earth", short for "Alternative Earth". The idea is that this type of planet looks very similar to Earth, and the life on it looks like strange versions of everyday creatures. And the reason is...they are! See, the story takes place 40,000 years in the future. By this time, humanity has expanded into a space-faring civilization, with colonies on many planets. Now my thinking was that many people were scared that Earth was the only planet that developed life on it. (Ha!). So, as a result, people decided to seed life on terraformed worlds, to "keep the spark alive", as it were. Of course, after they did this, they found real aliens, and everybody went, "Oops!" But my thought was that the life on these worlds would diversify over the 40,000 years, possibly into forms that are similar to many of the speculative futuristic animals that we have, and maybe even re-create life similar to prehistoric life. (I.e: rabbuck from After Man, the Rattlebacks of The Future is Wild, and re-born dino-birds, just to name a few.) So, in a sense, human stupidity is responsible for these alternative earths. So do you think this idea could work? That human intervention could come up with these funny backwards worlds? Edited by Spartan Delta, Jan 28 2011, 11:58 PM.
