Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Rick Raptor:That Baboon-lizard actually looks really cool, though I´m not sure a reptilian could evolve such a mammalian face.

They could have evolved from an arboreal reptile like the tree creeper from primeval,at least the shape of it body.

Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth.

See, the reason I don't agree with Crichton's theory of changing the past is because stopping the change in the past is, in effect, changing the past.

Say for instance that you go back in time to Obama's inauguration and try to assassinate him before he becomes president. Your gun jams, preventing you from shooting him. But security finds you and shoots you, causing a panic. Obama and his new administration duck.

Everyone is safe, but Obama and his administration are so scarred by the assassination attempt that they privatize inaugurations. So by the time he is reelected (assuming he is), no one can witness his reinauguration and he gains even more distrust.

Of course, that's a highly convoluted example. But it effectively proves my point.

The arboreal raptor itself isn´t very likely because of its too ape-like body :|

Maybe the weird baboon reptile is a kind of derived therocephalan/gorgonopsid. Or a weird derived lineage of mammalian notosuchid. Or a weird endothermic varanid descendent with erect legs. The giant eel seems like a kind of giant hagfish relative, and the pterodactyloid bats are also possible, in a world where birds never claimed dominance.

So many of this creatures are from different alternative timelines?.

P.S. The baboon-lyzard could have evolved from the Mer creatures from primeval XD .

The ecological changes would happen instantaneously, causing you not to be born, meaning you couldn't make the trip in the first place (in essence creating a paradox)).

That's actually not true, there's no such thing as a nonexistence paradox. You could go back in time and kill your own mother while she was pregnant with you and you would still exist. Why? Because changing the past creates a different time line from the one you were born in, which still exists somewhere. Merely going back in time changes the past, that's why the Doctor travels through time with reckless abandon and no regard for how his actions will affect history.

Temporal logic is a bitch.

That's actually not proven yet, since no one has actually gone back in time to test that. It's a theory. A good theory, yes. But it's equally likely for there to be nonexistence paradoxes or just random things happening that prevent you from changing the past in the first place.

Like say you went back in time to shoot your grandfather. Under one theory I've read (particularly in Michael Crichton's "Timeline" (he does quite a bit of research before writing his books. Even if "Jurassic Park" is inaccurate by modern standards, back in the late 80's or early 90's (forget when it was published) it was quite plausible. Though he did take artistic liberties)), the gun will jam, you'll shoot a blank, the bullet will miss, a bird will fly in to block the bullet, etc.

Now, I admit that I support your theory of a completely different timeline splitting off. But there are also other theories that are equally as likely at this point.
Unless of course, you shoot him after you're born, but before you own a gun. Or you shoot a turkey which was poisoned at the time and he finds it dying, and takes it home to eat, thus killing him.

Or there's the Schrodinger's Cat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger's_cat

I loved the movie even though it wasn't realistic. I havent seen it in ages but Dark Matter I dont recall these creatures very well: Giants ant, other quadruped lizards, wolf-crocs, Arachnid like mammal, Legged snakes, .pterodactyl like dragon
I am a Telepathic Trex
My Sister is a Mutant Alien Wolf
My other Sister is a deceiving Killer Beetle
My Dad is a Hungry Cockatrice
My Mum is a Sentient Parrot
And my Dog is a ................Fuzzy little German Shepard !!!

I like how there are two totally different converstaions. The older members (Canis, Parasky, and I) are talking about spacetime paradoxes, while the younger members (UT, Dark Matter, and Cephylus. You could also include Rick as he a had a long absence and returned rather recentlly.) talk about the life in the book.

I just think the creatures are more interesting, those space-time-paradox discussions just confuse me :P

I wouldn´t be surprised if Tim and Adrian actually got the idea for the Mer creatures from these baboon lizards.

What do the "wolf-crocs" look like? Because that name makes me think of some sort of cursorial Notosuchian.

I think the point in Crichton's book is that the place you travel to when you go back in time, well, it's not even the same universe as ours. It kind of relates back to the theory that the universes are constantly splitting. So the reason that the grandfather paradox doesn't work is that when they transported people back in time, they transported them into a completely different parallel universe, exactly same as ours but a bit... younger. So whatever you do in that alternate timeline, you end up altering that universe's future, not the universe that you come from.

Anyway, back to my discussing the critters. What do the arachnid-mammals, the wolf-crocs and pterodactyloid dragons look like? Can you gimme a link or something? Or post their image? The only critters I think I saw in the actual movie were the baboon lizards, the man-eating plants, the pterodactyloid bats, the giant hagfish/moray eel, the killer ants and the humanoid catfish.
