| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Somewhere in the future, human beings knowing the world's emminent enviromental collapse, and knowing they just couldn't spend many light years travelling untill they found a suitable planet, created three spaceship vessels called Genesis I, II and III, however this spaceships did not carry people or animals, the ship actually, had the DNA of every living being, including humans, and devices inside it in order to recreate them in a new random planet, whom the vessels were also programed to terraform whatever planet it landed on an earth like paradise "T3" planet,, Genesis I carried mammals, including humans, Genesis II carried birds, Genesis III carried all reptiles besides birds, each of them also carried plants, invertebrates , microorganisms and other stuff, again in case one of them was destroyed, this way, humans and other animals could resist extinction in a new world. These vessels were then launched, and spent gazillions of years travelling to the depths of outer space, searching for a new planet, each vessel independently could terraform independently, incase something happened to one the others, Genesis I, that carried humans was more well protected and led the others, however, something tragic happened, Genesis I was damaged while crossing an asteroid beltand was destroyed and lost forever. The last hope of Mankind was lost. However Genesis II and III were still up and running, however they got loose from eachother and each one ventured different worlds in the depths of space, somewhere near the horsehead nebula, Genesis II landed in a planet 6 times the size of earth and started terraforming it, creating oceans , two large continents one in the east, other in the far west, the planet was now teeming with life and G II now could start recreating the birds, with the lack of mammals and reptiles, birds could now evolve into all niches left by those, and becoming the dominant vertebrates, this planet was now ORNITERRA! The Planet of Birds!! Animals: Arcadians (Strigosapiens macrops) http://austroraptor.deviantart.com/art/Orniterra-Arcadian-193755367 With two completely unconected continents, orniterra could afford getting two sapient species, both evolved from strigopine parrots, that evolved societies as advanced as the old Greeks and other civilizations. one, evolved from kakapos became a race of pacific merchants and peasants, that developed a taste for literature and poetry, those are the Arcadians (Strigosapiens Macrops), they lived in large merchanting cities aswell as ruralareas where they planted berries and farmed worms and other insects, Arcadians had a government system quite similar to ancient feudal Japanese, each city being and independent states ruled by a lord aswell as his loyal noblemen , however, differently from the ancient japanese, they weren't much of a war going species, and preferred to study sciences and litherature. Their belief system was very nature based and animistic, as a result, they didn't impacted very much the enviroment (atleast nowhere as near as humans), they were politheists and believed in many different gods, each one based on a creature on their enviroment. The Arcadians evolved from kakapos, they started as land dwelling parrots, but as predators were evolving they evolved arboreal and re evolved grasping fingers, then, one species that liked to walk on the ground more often, ventured the plains and savannahs and evolved to both sapient kinds and baboon /Patas monkey like creatures, later on becoming the actual arcadians. The arcadians are the only sapient descendants of kakapos, but are not the only living descendants of kakapos. Pouched Flapper: http://austroraptor.deviantart.com/art/Orniterra-Pouched-Flapper-194136793 On orniterra, temperatures rise from Tropical to Subtropical/Mildly temperate, and mammals and non bird reptiles are absent. Large cartilaginous fish such as sharks and rays evolved bigger to occupy the niches of dolphins and baleen whales, while the niches of seals and sea lions were occupied by penguins. the penguins of Orniterra evolved from spheniscus penguins, more tolerant of warmer temperatures and less specialized than their subantartican cousins, the more terrestrial going sea lion analogues or Squabbers were quite like large versions of their earthly ancestors with long beaks, while the more aquatic and specialized seal analogues or Flappers looked different to a point of almost being unrecognizable, the Flappers specialized so much that they even lost their feathers even tough these were already specialized, and evolved a very smooth, dolphin like skin, that helped them go even faster in the water as they looked for fish, their body was modified to the aquatic enviroment to a point that they couldn't even walk on land anymore and had to move on land in the seal way, their wings became giant flippers that let them swim at incredible speeds, they changed so much, that if a human was able to see them it would mistake it for a seal with large flippers and a beak. The particular species represented, the Pouched Flapper (Zallophodyptes macropterus) is the largest of the known flapper species, reaching the size of an elephant seal, this creature behaved quite similar to the elephant seals of earth actually, its pouch besides being usefull to catch prey like the pouch of a pelican, was also used for display and turns vivid red (it usually is dull brown) on males on the mating season, males also fight viciously for females and have a social pattern similar to elephant seals too, they inhabit the southernmost temperate areas of the eastern continent and are usually spotted by the sapient arcadians, who have written many poems on this creatures, and made them kinda pop cult animals (quite like dolphins are pop cult today). I do art sometimes. "if you want green eat a salad" Projects: Amammalia: A strange place where mammals didn't make it and the land is, once again, dominated by archosaurs. Oceanus: An endless sea dotted with islands, reefs, and black holes. Literally endless, literal black holes. ❤️❤️~I'm not a boy~❤️❤️ | |

11 times the size of Earth? Unless it much less dense I don't think humans could survive.....

First of all, humans don't survive. They were on board the Gen 1 ship apparently, which was lost in space and blew up. The density would allow for extremely large birds, yes. But I think it's a bit too much. I admit, I don't know enough about planetary science to tell you how much is just right (talk to Empyreon or T.Neo about it). |

The planet itself is very not dense at all, infact it would be about as dense as our earth perhaps even a tad less, i made the planet that large so it would be impossible for the two sapient species to ever meet eachother. anyway, one more critter comming Giant Vorval: http://austroraptor.deviantart.com/art/Orniterra-Giant-Vorval-194163025 In Orniterra, the absence of mammals made ratites take all large mammal niches, in the eastern continent, Arcadia, descendants of emus took all niches that were of large lowland mammals in earth, and descendant of the andean Darwin's Rheas took the niche of mountain dwelling creatures/goat analogues. A group of emus got particularly big and fullfilled the niches of Giraffes and Elephants, those where the Vorvals (Vorval in one of the various Arcadian languages meaning tall beast), gigantic birds as big as earth's birds have never been. This particular species shown here, the Giant vorval (Dinodromaius gigas) was particularly enormous, they were as tall as an african elephant at the shoulder and with their long necks, surpassed many dinosaurs in tall, their behaviour was quite similar to elephants as well, they travelled and migrated in large herds, but unlike elephants, the males are the ones who make herds and the females are quite solitary, like most ratites of earth, Vorval males care for their young, while females just mate and leave the eggs for the male to incubate and care, so Vorval herds are quite of opposites to elephant herds, Patriarchal male based herds with their young, tough in most ecological aspects Giant vorvals took the niche of animals and apart what afforementioned, behaviorally their kinda similar. The Giant Vorval is a sacred animal for the arcadians and one of their gods is a Vorval, and comparing Orniterran Arcadian mythology to Earth's, Bahvorca, the vorval god , in its mythology acts and behaves pretty much like Ganesh, the elephant god of hindu mthology, being a cult and benevolent deity that protects the plains, arcadians and vorvals Edited by Yi Qi, Jan 20 2011, 12:27 AM.

I like the ratite you have an awesome gallery . So ratites are the largest megafauna on this planet? Also I agree. 11 times is a bit much. Just 3 or 4 times would prevent sapients from interacting most of the time. But I still wanna see some kind of gigantic lanky flying birds. Maybe some to reach Quetzalcoatylus or Hatzegopteryx size? Perhaps descended from storks or cranes. And yeah, doesn't this belong in Evolutionary Continuum? |

Yes, they are the largest terrestrial animals
Yea i tthink i exaggerated a bit, ill reduce it to 6 times Edit: changed it
Birds can't reach such sizes and keep their flight, their flight is far more limited by weight than pterosaurs, however, big flying birds as the size of pelagornithids and Teratornithids do exist on the planet, their the closest we can get realistically from a azdharchid sized bird.
It does Edited by Yi Qi, Jan 20 2011, 12:52 AM.

In such a big planet, even if they got boats and stuff,i doubt they could meet, with no islands between two isolated and unconnected continents it would be very hard if they ever met. For one, take this example,if there wasn't the american continent on his way, Columbus would never reached the other side of the atlantic, and his travel would have been suicidal, imagine now multiply by six times the distance and heve nothing between it, thats what separated the Spartans (Sapient species of the west ) from the Arcadians. Atleast with their current technology (About as advanced as ancient greeks), or with any kind of boat, would be impossible for them to meet, but of course theres a very slim chance it could happen in the planet's future times Edited by Yi Qi, Jan 20 2011, 01:29 PM.
