Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Would it be possible for fungus to evolve into animal-like forms?

I was thinking slug because my anus rippers are highly evolved fungus.

I'm not entirely sure, plants/fungus aren't my strong suit but that sounds fairly plausible but the have no way to truly think, and lost my train of thought. Something about how it couldn't work... Dammit

Fungus have no organs actually. Except maybe you cound the "mushrooms", though that's a moot point I guess. So, without organs, how would they ever become animal like, unless they evolve organs first?

Fungi would have to evolve differentiation, specialisation, and regulatory...

Basically, everyhting eukaryotes had to evolve. Maybe, 1.5 Ga worth of work.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Or a couple decades, given the technology.

It doesn't really work like that, it's far easier to start with eukaryotes and make them do whatever than make fungi into eukaryotes and make them do whatever.

I was refering to geneticly altering fungus to have small organs, and then working up. Not turning it into something else.

Eukaryotes are pretty perfectly what would be made, so yes making them into something else.

What do you want them to do?

Become slug-like, then snail-like, and keep working my way up until we have the anus ripper.

I think fungus-like lifeforms could give rise to more animal-like forms. However, the latter may be very different from Earthly animals. For example, given the way fungi eat, they may have two or more mouths, OEsophagi, stomachs, etc. It would be like Empyreon's two-way GI tract idea, but taken to an even further extreme. Such creatures may well have mouths at the ends of some or all of their limbs! :o
