Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Well , is there some way to actually know why we breath what we do? I could be wrong but didn't early Cyanobacteria use CO2 and had oxygen as a waste product.

Fakey, the reason we don't breathe nitrogen is because we can't metabolize/use it in its atmospheric form. That's why we have nitrogen-fixating bacteria and legumes to transform the atmospheric nitrogen into usable nitrogen.

Yes, oxygen was a biotoxin when it was first introduced. I'm not actually sure why we use oxygen. All I know is that cyanobacteria would inhale the CO2 for photosynthesis and, as a part of that photosynthesis, would exhale oxygen, causing it to become very plentiful.

It's still a biotoxin, as oxidation is bad for us.

Yeah, it's still a biotoxin if you get 100% oxygen. But we still use it to breathe and it's still quite efficient.

Still, oxygen works well enough.

At least until we perfect water breathing.

Water creatures use oxygen as well. So that's a terrible argument.

I'm talking about the water itself. Not the disolved O2.

The water has dissolved oxygen in it, exactly why creatures breathe the water.

I'm talking about the water itself. You know, aqua purificana.

Creatures breathe the oxygen in the water, not the water itself.
