| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. We all know the typical cliches in speculative evolution projects. Everybody wants to get rid of cliches, but it's hard for one person to come up with new ideas. So I'm making this topic. This topic is very 'general'. The point of this topic is to come up with new ideas. New ideas!!!!!!! Anyone can post any ideas they have, it can be ideas for new projects, individual creatures (fauna and flora), biomes and niches. Any idea related to speculative evolution, and it can be a topic for evolutionary continuum, alternative evolution, habitable zone, alternate universes and pop-culture spec. Just try to avoid cliches. Anyone can post ideas, but anyone can evaluate it. Anybody can use the ideas given permission by the person who came up with the idea. |

I recently had an idea for intelligent plant life, and I'd like to see what you guys think. The "plants" have 2 very different genders the plant like "males" are unintelligent and their roots act as a skeleton for the females. the females are more like giant slime molds, covering the roots and bodies of the "males"(really hermaphrodites). The colony of females are then separated into castes and carry out certain bodily functions, digestion of materials, waste, reproduction, thinking cells. (The colony acts as one organism) the females are also able to transmit neural signals to each other through spear like organs that pierce the outer membrane of the cell. oh, I left out reproduction the cells are constantly being renewed and reborn, most are born colony females. But if a male is born It stays with the colony until it reaches maturity, when it does it simply drops off the colony and gives birth to the colony that will take care of it throughout its life. |

I hate cliches as much as the next guy but, in future evolution especially, some things are cliche because they are likely to happen. Like seal-like penguins if pennipeds go extinct. Or a pig radiation in the abscence of large herbivores. Or the extinction of large cats, to be replaced by smaller cats or mustilleds. |

Uru; that's a hell weird idea. But nice. So the whole colony of intelligent females based on non-sapient males act as a single organism? Canis; yeah, it's hard to avoid certain cliches in future evo. But I don't see why everybody makes seal-like penguins. I mean, fur seals and sea lions are far more likely to survive compared to penguins. If Antarctica warms up and foreign species invasion begins, penguins aren't very likely to survive in my opinion. Plus they aren't afraid of humans or other invasive species which can get penguins into a lot of problem. Inspired by Uru's sapients, why no symbiotic or parasitic sapience of some kind? Also, why no squamate sapients? Monitor lizards, I think, are pretty damn intelligent. |

Yep the male are just used to randomize genetic information. I'm actually skeptic of parisitic sapients, very few are able to impose will over other organisms. But some squamates could be capable. |

Sorry about the double post but I can't stop thinking about these plant things. Could the plants be parasitic? males being eaten by traditional animals and then budding and forming colonies to "clear out the insides of the animal and then useing it as a body insted of a root structure. Which seems more practical? And would anyone be interested if I made this into a serious project? |

We breathe Oxygen. The atmosphere has more Nitrogen. So no. They'd go with the second most plentiful gas. And seeing as Oxygen wasn't really something found in our atmosphere until photosynthesis came around, even then your claim is dubious. And then there's the fact that Oxygen is a biotoxin, and we are breathing poison. |
