Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

L'évolution Spéculative est moi

Anyone ever seen Primeval? I've been sick this past week and laying in bed watching this show, it's so interesting. I'm still not exactly sure what's going on, but these British people police these holes in time or something and make sure that creatures don't come through them. Lots of them are prehistoric animals, but there are also apparently animals from the future and dinosaurs that either don't exist or I've never seen before (were there actually monkey-raptors that hunted prey with a prehensile tail? I find it hard to believe).

EDIT: OH MY GOD I KNEW IT. THIS SHOW HAS DR. JULIAN BASHIR!
Edited by Ànraich, Jan 16 2011, 03:37 AM.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Those monkeyish raptors didn't exist; they are chimp models with reptile heads and tails, the way they move and their joints should give that away.

Of course I have, been watching it since it started. Last nights episode was pretty good.

I like to think the Tree Creeper was either some sort of future lizard, or was created by humans.

Yeah, I've watched it avidly since it started. I think my favourite animal so far is probably Rex. Although I'm not sure how a prehistoric lizard can be smarter than most similar sized mammals.

I´m a fan of that show since its first season back in 2007. I especially like that most of their creatures are NOT dinosaurs, but animals which lived before or after the dinosaurs (though the fourth season feaures much more Cretaceous animals).

It´s from Tim Haines who also made the Walking with... series and he wanted to include those prehistoric animals in family drama. Being a Science Fiction show they make all their prehistoric creatures bigger and more scary looking than the real thing (and some like the BoarCroc are heavily reimagined). And they thought "with rips in time and space, why do we only have to include prehistoric animals?" so they included some (rather implausible) future creatures aswell. There is a thread in General Spec about them: http://s1.zetaboards.com/Conceptual_Evolution/topic/1661378/1/

The animal from the episode you watched is supposed to be an undiscovered dromaeosaurid which lives in trees, and while it may be a cool creature it´s rather inaccurate based on what we know about arboreal dinosaurs (Microraptor, Scansoriopteryx and so on).

Yeah, prehinsile tails in dromaeosaurs? And they use their tails like cthulhu tentacles (to grab foolish mortals)?

I also liked the non-dinosaurian creatures, Season 1 and 2 before the invasion of dinosaurs into the show began was best in my opinion.

The things to remember with this show are:

1. Nobody in the team is a palaeontologist, let alone one who specialises in whatever comes out of the anomaly. And typically when talking about the beasties, they are talking to someone who is even less knowledgeable about prehistoric life than they are.
2. We've only scratched the surface when it comes to palaeontology, anomalies appear everywhere and everywhen. The chances of getting a species we're familiar with is pretty low.

So don't say "But Kentrosaurus only grew to 5.5 meters, that animal is 7 metres long at least! This show is so inaccurate!"

But some things like elephant-sized Scorpions in the low-oxygen Silurian desert can´t be explained away by "well, we just haven´t found fossils of these animals yet".
