Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I guess the banner ads change from region to region...

I get a few ads tailored to my country, even a few tailored to my city... when you think about it - it's an invasion of privacy, but if you truly ruly wanted privacy, you would have microwaved your simcard and burnt all your computers by now - and I am sure that the agreement to join this forum (which I forgot to get my brief to give a once over) mentions banner ads etc...

Anyway, from Perth Western Australia, I see quite a few banner ads from Christian groups promising to convince infidel atheists (some christian groups believe that evolution science is an affront to god) that creationism is a valid science...

I have no sword to bear against christians, or muslims, or any other (my favourite religions are shamanism and buddhism and animism, + with a tad of Zoroaster and NEW TESTAMENT Christianity thrown in, and couple ideas that Mohammed scribbled down too) - but does anyone think its a conspiracy? They've tailored their audience to people who believe in evolution, not as a "belief" system, but just the most rational scientific theory to explain the sheer diversity and woonder of nature?

Evolution doesn't deny the place for a divine being! For devout Jews (and evangelical christians) it just makes the old book that the jews carried in their heads from exodus in babylon look like a fanciful folk tale...

As someone raised a Catholic, self-converted to atheism at 11, then embraced agnosticism about 27, I've always thought Christianity was about Jesus teaching love thy neighbour, embrace his differences, tolerate his peculiarities? Love the sinner?

I just can't get my head around fundamentalist Christians embracing the old testament... And their abhorration of homosexuality... In the Old Testament you're supposed to kill your neighbour if he works on the Sabbath, covets his neighbour's wife, eats pig or shellfish or camel or hare, or "sleeps with a male"... so why don't all these "reptilian-cerebro-cortex" thinking evangelicals stop working on Sunday, stop having bacon for breakfast? Stop eating oysters and "craw"-fish?

-- oh crap -- I just remembered - no discussions about religion! Dang!

And to Empyreon... I love your projects - and your art... it's amazing and to be encouraged and commended...

To that I will add that my wife works as an admin assistant and sometime embalming assistant to a family of Mormon Funeral Directors...

Their whole family are beautiful people, their patrician is a bit of a bastard, but he respects me as an alpha male biker (he used to be a pot smoking biker himself [I never smoke pot]), and we get on okay - but he's a bit of a tyrant, but their children are beautiful and so full of life - something to be said for Mormonsim? My daughters are best friends with the girls of that family...

I embrace all cultures and religions - but I HATE it when "faithists" want to adulterate science with blind faith...

It's against Zetaboards TOS to discuss the adverts. :P
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Thanks Holben - I am beholden to you...

I've never trusted fine print, ever since that cynical children's author Roald Dahl made a mockery of it in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.... which I read in 1970... but didn't see the movie (Willy Wonka) till the video decade of the 1980s - still prefer that kyke Gene Wilder as Willy to Johnny Depp...

I will never discuss advertising on this forum again... ha ha ha ha ha (in my best drunken evil genius cackle)....

Nope. He said anyone who does not follow him is an antichrist. He also said something about bringing in a sword and killing people, so he is in no way a peacemaker.

He said a lot of things Fakey, and is well known to enjoy the wines.

Personally I enjoy the two movies as their own rather than preferring one over the other, they're different enough, ya know?

There's also evidence that Jesus wasn't one person, but rather a bunch of random guys all over the midde east with the same name.

Anyway, I off to play Team Fortress 2.

Well the ads are determined by certain words picked up in the posts in a thread. Because our threads have many evolution related terms, it brings it a lot of creationist ads, since there aren't many science ones.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

that's funny Parasky!

not taking the piss out of you - but the "random picker of key words" deciding that Evolution is a separate science from the rest of science...

I love it when I see a creationist driving a car, or getting dialisys or getting x-rays... They're happy to accept the "rest of science" but can't acccept one of the fundamentals of biology and geology... I don't hate them, I just feel pity for them.... the poor benighted fools!

This is one of the best arguments i use:

Me: So what is bigger the Earth or the Moon?

Creationist: Moon

Me: Who told you that?

Creationist: Urm... Books

Me: Well who got the evidence?

Creationist: NASA

Me: Well they are scientists yet you believe them? Why don't you go live in a cave if you think scientists cannot be trusted since they have accomplished far more than any bishop has?

I don't find it so odd that a creationist would drive a car or use other machines, I mean, those are tools that humans created so it's all good to them. I can easily understand why they would be more willing to accept information about things that are currently in existence or going on, especially since they don't normally conflict with any stories that they unfortunately take in a literal sense.

Also of course the Earth is bigger than the moon, look to your left and right and you can't see the whole Earth while if you look up you can see the entire moon in one view xP hahahah

'Dougal, THIS cow is small, THOSE ONES are FAR AWAY.'

Please don't compare reptiles to creationists. Reptiles are perfectly decent, relaxed animals that only hurt you out of hunger, fear or accident and are generally a pleasure to be with. Creationists are like angry ferrets. Go near them offering friendly chat, they try to kill you. Pick one up and show it evidence that your position is stronger, the little bugger twists in its skin and bites till you let go.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

My argument is usually along the lines of this -

them- sceince has no proof for evolution, we have plenty of proof for creation

me-what proof do you have that it was your god that did it

them- the bible

me- you realise most other pieces of holy scripture have just as much, if not more, credibility than the bible

them- NOOO!!! the Bible was written by GOD!!!

me- I see, about 4500 years after he apparently created the world

them- *angry silence*

me- Thats right, you just got served
