Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

L'évolution Spéculative est moi

So recently I've gotten in to Doctor Who, but being American I have no idea where to begin. I like watching it on BBC America, but I'd like to start from the beginning so I can actually understand some of the stuff they mention (I obviously know about the Daleks though; who doesn't?). But as far as my understanding goes, there are many Doctors. First of all let me just say that I am not a fan of Matt Smith, so don't even recommend his series. I like the one with David Tennant, but I've been told he's not the best Doctor.

So, Brits of SE, where do I begin?
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

I am no brit but i am a whovian. start with Eccleson(sp?) Then Tennet, then smith. Or if oyu want ot go ALL the way to the beginning you'll have to ask a true brit. My Doctor is Tennett. Eccleson was too ugly and smiths forehead and too huge.
don't Blink. Blink and you're Dead. Don't turn your Back. don't Look Away, and Don't blink. Good luck
He never raised his voice. That was the worst thing - the fury of a Time Lord - and then we discovered why. Why this Doctor, who had fought with Gods and Demons, why he had run away from us and hidden. He was being kind.

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

I'm not sure how available the original series with the first eight Doctors are. However, it's probably in your interest to try and start from the series with Christopher Eccleston, as it should explain some of the recurring background plots, such as the Timelord-Dalek War. Then onto David Tennant, whom I believe to have been the best Doctor of them all.

And I don't mind Matt Smith, personally. I think he's got the eccentricity of the Doctor perfectly.

Ah, the eighth doctor's movie isn't accepted as canon though.

He looks way too much like one of my friends. And I don't like his hair.

I just find Matt Smith irritating... David Tennant is the best.

Definitely start at the 2005 series and go from there. The 2005 series was a revival so it explains all :)

And, the old episodes from the 20th century can seem rather silly when seen in modern lights, so you may not like them.

I rather like Matt Smith, I prefer David Tennant but I don't think he's bad. Tennant's series with Billie Piper is the very best in my opinion.

Will you be watching the 2011 series as it comes out?

Here is an interesting observation about Science Fiction I've been wanted to share. Notice how they reflect the culture of the nation that produces them, American fiction features big organisations doing grand things, Starfleet, Stargate Command, Earthforce.
British SF has a man, often in a shed, sometimes saving the world. The Doctor, Arthur Dent, Professor Quatermass, even Torchwood only has about five people in it.

Will there be daleks next series? There must be, but the preview made it look like it was all ONE BIG STORY ARC
