| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

I have an idea. One of the main reasons why i personally don't spec much is the fact that large projects dominate the speccing sections, plus it is really hard to get a project up and running, especially if your not as good as everyone else, and you have to compete with the large projects. most of the time you'll start a topic which'll get a few pages of comments and then everyone will forget about it. My Idea is having a new section called something like 'New Project Ideas', where you post your ideas for new projects and such and such, basicly it could be similar to the section in SE RPGs called 'New RPG ideas'. does anyone think it could work? |

I think we should just limit the number of projects you can have at a time. We can archive projects that are not being worked on or no longer hold the community's interest. But the idea of a "validation process" for projects is good too. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

So, does that mean I'm royally screwed? Because I'm still working on TA, but I don't have much time to up-date |

Not necessarily. I don't exactly update Priapus Prime on a regular basis, but I am still working on it. We can't expect each other to just have ideas popping into our heads constantly. I think we should also try to attract more older members. I like that this place works to keep lots of young people interested in science, but we could also use some more adults. I know we have a couple of actual scientists on here (or at least people studying science at universities), but they no longer post. One thing that might help is if we entered Battle of the Boards. We entered back in '08 and did pretty well, but I like to think we've gotten better since then. They don't have an exact deadline for entry, but it will close sometime in February so if we're going to enter we better do it soon. The real question is, if we enter what do we need to do before then? We don't want this place to be cluttered and divided and full of drama. It wouldn't reflect well on |

What's the battle of the boards? Also, one thing I've noticed is that there are a lot of topics in the Habitable Zone that aren't anywhere near projects, get abandoned after a few posts, and generally just clutter up the page. Maybe we could have a child board of the habitable zone(and, really, any of the four) that serves as a home for large projects. This could also help with the fact that a lot of really good projects get buried underneath brief ones. |

As for the projects, when a project is large enough I usually am willing to give it a subforum all its own within the Habitable Zone. Same with the other sections. Maybe we need to add a subforum for the smaller projects as well? Not one for each, as with the larger ones, but a "Community Projects" kind of thing where they will stay until they are big enough to have their own subforum. |

I'm talking about the projects which are of quality, and of a few pages long. If you look through the habitable zone, you'll see the majority of projects are only one or two pages long, and there's literally hundreds of these burying some of the inactive ones that are really nice and large. Just a subforum with the thirty or so best projects would allow the best stuff the site has to offer to be on display, rather than tucked away twenty pages backed. |

Yes but what about those projects that are deemed unworthy? Are we just supposed to tell people "your project isn't good enough so it can't stay?" |

I think it should be put up to a vote. Have people nominate other's projects, and move those to a new child board. Each will be voted upon, if it gets a majority it stays. It's a shame to have so many great projects locked away, where new members don't have knowledge. I certainly haven't read many of the site's earlier projects. |

I disagree. If older projects are archived, then you have some new stuff for it after a few months, then you're screwed. The 3 forums for all projects with no archives has worked for the past ~2.5 years, no need to change it now. |

Just because a system's been around for a while doesn't mean that it's the best way to do it. Especially as the site grows older, projects will get buried deeper and deeper. |

I agree that the number of projects is a concern and inhibits other topics, but I don't think it's fair to archive others works because of that. Even with a majority vote. I think what we should do is make new subforums for the various projects to be stored in where they won't clutter the real discussion (i.e, Encyclopedia Galactica for the Habitable Zone, Transcosmic Bestiary for Alternative Evolution, Chrononaut's Fieldguide for Evolutionary Continuum). That way nobody has to sacrifice their work. We should also establish a cutoff date; that is to say, we should establish a protocol for determining when a project has died. If you don't work on a project for, say, three months or so then it should be archived away until you either decide you want to work on it again or want it deleted. |
