| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I was wondering - there are some hybrids between different animals these days ( don't seem to recall any at the moment, but I know there are such ). What others do you think will come to exist? |

There's also bactrian camel x dromedary camel hybrids. There was one at a zoo I went too, and like ligers are bigger than their parents species, this guy was huge. Human made hybrids include the geep (goat x sheep), but it's actually a chimera, not a true hybrid. There's also the Spider Goat, which have spider genes which allow the females to excrete spider silk proteins in their milk. The resulting spider silk fiber is said to be “more durable than Kevlar, more stretchable than nylon, and stronger than steel.” There are also experimental cases where scientists are trying to give pigs human genes so that their organs could be used in transplants without fear of rejection. Another experiment is trying to combine pig with mouse genes to try and make their excrement less damaging to the environment. No interordinal (between different orders) animal hybrids are known. |

What's the most distantly-related hybrid known? |

Too lazy to look it up, have a Wikipedia article: Hybrids between different subspecies within a species (such as between the Bengal tiger and Siberian tiger) are known as intra-specific hybrids. Hybrids between different species within the same genus (such as between lions and tigers) are sometimes known as interspecific hybrids or crosses. Hybrids between different genera (such as between sheep and goats) are known as intergeneric hybrids. Extremely rare interfamilial hybrids have been known to occur (such as the guineafowl hybrids). No interordinal (between different orders) animal hybrids are known. So interfamilial is the most distantly related you can get. The only example of that I can find is the guineafowl example given on Wikipedia. |

Intra-specific, interspecific - very small differences in letters, but bigger in reality.

That is just speculation by scientists. It hasn't been created yet so therefore, we can't be certain if the hybrid will exist or not. |

Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems.. | |

Intraspecies - existing or occurring within a species Interspecies - existing or occurring between species Agreed, but that's what wikipedia uses, and that's what every other website I have found uses. *shrugs* |

Mammoth hybrids are perfectly possible. Elephas is much more closely related to Mammuthus than Loxodonta, and they have produced hybrids in the past. All we need now is some well preserved mammoth spooge. Or a living cow mammoth. Pity Elephants are so rare and take so long to breed. I should like to see what an Adult Elephas/Loxodonta hybrid looks like. |
