| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Title doesn't make sense? Well neither do plants! I'm trying to figure out what plants would thrive on my world, but... I don't know the first thing about plants. So... crash course on plants? There's so much to the bloody things... I've focused on animals too much throughout my life, I need to start catching up on the other living things. Basics to begin with. Links, posts, whatever. Lay it on me! |

Basically developing your flora is not much different from developing your fauna, except that they don't move. Often people seem to just slap together kingdoms that are essentially animals and plants, and there's nothing wrong with that at all, obviously since they exist and are prolific here on Earth that means there's a nice chance that fairly similar cell set ups will exist elsewhere. Firstly you figure out what kind of cell your "plants" will have, if they have a cell wall you can bet your ass that a multicellular organism will take advantage of that for structural support, meaning you'll get wooden or rigged bodies without moving or pumping parts. With that in mind they will likely be forced, at least in short term, to rely on water moving around via pressure to collect their nutrients. Not to mention you have to take into consideration ancestors, that's just standard procedure. But most basically you're going to have a part of the body that collect nutrients from a source, a system in the body that transports the nutrients throughout, and a part of the body that uses light to produce their energy source, usually sugars. |

I am taking full advantage of Wikipedia too, no worries! I haven't much thought about evolving the plants yet, seeing as how my project is 230 million years in the future, I'd be content (for now) with learning about existing plants that could survive in the climate and topography and later on play god, so to speak. I'm looking at the Triassic period, Africa (especially the Sahara desert and surrounding area) and Australia for ideas, as they are landmasses with similar weather and climate to what I have on Pangaea Ultima. |

If you want to learn the basics about plants I suggest looking for David Attenborough's The Private Life of Plants. It's a really good program. |

So what are the things you really need to know about, the program should cover a lot but probably not everything. |

Well I'll watch the program first and take notes (I am such a nerd) and then I'll see where I need to go from there. I'll probably watch it tonight, as I have plans this morning and afternoon. |

And make sure to familiarise yourself with the main groups, etc.! Also, just pick a book on 'the organisation of plants' etc. from the library or something! |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |
