Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

So this book is really awesome, its a historical fiction that puts you in the shoes of a Utahraptor 120 mya and you follow her life for 1 year and it is possibly the best book i have ever read. If you've read it discuss here.
I do art sometimes.

Projects:
Amammalia: A strange place where mammals didn't make it and the land is, once again, dominated by archosaurs.

Oceanus: An endless sea dotted with islands, reefs, and black holes. Literally endless, literal black holes.

Are you plausible?

Wouldn't that make it prehistorical fiction? ;)

Seriously, though, I've been meaning to pick this book up. How long is it? Maybe I can squeeze it into my holiday break...

I've never read it. Have you read the Mammoth Trilogy by Stephen Baxter? It's pretty enjoyable, and if you are interested in Spec then the book set on Mars should be very interesting.

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

It is, I also recommend Robert J. Sawyer's Quintaglio Ascension Trilogy, it's about a species of Tyrannosaurus transplanted long ago to a distant moon. Each book follows the work of one of their great scientists, their equivalents of Galileo, Darwin and some psychology person. Fraud I think.

Anther excellent book, is Dinosaur Summer. It's a sort off sequel to The Lost World and delves into how the plateau affected history, the last dinosaur circus is closing down and a freelance reporter and his son are following an expedition to release most of the dinosaurs back onto the plateau.
