Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

People getting taller is better nutrition and health care, the Japanese have rocketed up since the end of the war, and the Chinese are having a growth spurt now too.

I really doubt humans will evolve much differently on our own. We have to live underground, bring some lights.

Humanity will end when someone builds a fast as light drive. The faster you go the greater your mass until the universe falls in on you.

Interesting read, Skwirl. I found it amusing. :P

lamna, the whole point of faster than light travel is to circumvent that...

Doing 0.999999 the speed of light, an 80 kilogram person will appear to mass 56 tons. But that's only from an outside, inertial reference frame... onboard the ship, you would still mass the same as normal.

Of course, going at such an insane speed has other problems... like the uber-fancy propulsion system you'd need, and the fact that a milligram of cosmic debris would hit with the energy of 15 tons of TNT...

So how will it end?

Lamna, T. neo said it- we won't need to evolve to new habitats, we will change them. Floodlgihts, habitable enclosures, etc...
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Yeah, it's not like recessive genes are particularly sexy and will "outcompete" the dominant healthy genes, but like hell are we willing to exile a living thinking person just because they can't see good, so we invent glasses, and now they're the norm, and they've been the norm for hundreds of years now and we still have people with 20/20 vision.
Oh Fine.

Yes, it is a fun site.

I agree, one cannot dismiss technology or its influence on mankind's evolution.

Indeed, Sliver. I do wonder sometimes if we'll ever need something like embryo screening to screen out problem genes, I think it could be quite advantageous but the potential for the abuse of such techology (Gattaca-like elitism) worries me.

Personally I don't think we will ever need them, but I'm sure there will be such a demand for them by worrisome parents, and by worrisome I mean people who worry about what having a "messed up" child would do to their image (Oh it's the Johnsons, you know, the couple with the retarded kid), that they will eventually appear anyway.

Sometimes I'm okay with this since it makes perfect sense to screen out problem genes from the gene pool, but then again it's not like these people are going to pump out dozens of kids if even one in their lifetime, and it seems like several of the ones that people would be wanting to check for and get rid of are mutations or screw ups that will happen over and over and over and won't actually be able to be "removed from the gene pool"... along with people choosing their child's skin colour and eye colour and nose shape and eventually people will just be creating kids as what seems fashionable or popular to have... similar to that Gattaca elitism...

So rather than screening I think it'd be better to figure out how to fix the problem or make life easier after birth rather than preventing the birth in the first place...
Oh Fine.

I said fast as light drive. You can't go faster than light. That would be silly.

There are a bunch of references to designer children on the web. I have even seen tv shows that focus on it. Tho it won't be needed, that won't stop mankind from trying it out. Society has become a survival factor in our species. Society has dictated changes in us before and will do so again. At one time in our history women who were plump or fat were the prize. Now we seek women that are healthy and fit. At one time, the best hunter was the prize, now it is the best provider. I recently read that female puberty is arriving earlier than in the past. This is despite societies laws that dictate the age of consent. With our society that is continuously changing I see designer children becoming a lucrative business. Parents not only want their child to be strong and healthy. They want their child to be handsome/pretty, smart and coordinated for society. They want their children to be successful in society. Actively seeking the best partner no longer means the partner with the best genes for the animal body it means the best genes for prosperity and society values. The problem is society changes so rapidly different traits may be desired within the same generation.
