Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I bet that most of you have seen that the way technology is going, people will start replacing lost hands or legs with robotic ones. What do you think about this?

yes, the nanobots can move metal atoms around the robot to where they are needed. they can then be bonded together to repair the chassis.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

That is until the robot walks over a iron mine and gets fused to the ground.

No... the atoms are transported around the robot's body, they don't just accumulate where they're picked up. And plus, they can be kept in suspension.

Nanomachines? We're not going to have ones to do that before we have robots that need parts replacing.

Indeed.

Also: why start with nanomachines from scratch, when advanced nanotechnology exists in the world around us?

You can't eat nanomachines if you have no other food.

No they wouldn't. You actually want to go for micromachines, not true nanoscale machines... but they would still rely on nanoscale engineering. Like life does.

Yeah, life has problems. But that's where the design and stuff comes in. My point is that there's already an existing basis, far more advantageous to use that than waste time building your own.

Sure they would. They could move faster, would be more durable, would be able to transport more, receive more complicated instructions, be smaller... the list goes on.

Once you've got smaller than life's workings, what then? Mechanical nanomachines can go where life fears to tread.
