| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I bet that most of you have seen that the way technology is going, people will start replacing lost hands or legs with robotic ones. What do you think about this? |

I for one do not see humanity becoming a load of machines or cyborgs anytime soon, one reason being the squick factor. There is also the unreliability and limits of technology, and those natural purists of us. |

Well, no one knows what can happen after two centuries or so, and none of us will be around to see that. But i'm just saying it's possible.

Certainly possible, but possibly not desirable. ![]() Do i seem a little cold? Anyway. In two centuries, who knows. Could the Iphone have been predicted 30 years ago? |

I don't see it happening unless we spend thousands of years in space and our limbs atrophy. Or turn into this

You're not cold, this is a normal debate, or whatever we'd like to call it. ![]() For the Iphone - that's my point - nothing is known. |

EWWWW Pando. I don't like these 'evolutions of humans'. How would they get to reproduce against the more attractive sepcimens? |

Hmm i could see genetic enhancements but i doubt many people would want to be cyborgs...maybe criminals could be turned to cyborg slaves apart from that i dont know |

If humans are going to evolve, the ones which look appealing to the opposite gender are going to pass on their genes. rather than slug-like ones. |

Hmm, I think I understand. I wonder what would happen if people really changed into cyborgs. What would happen to their minds? |

Well maybe reproduction would falter i reckon those with cyber enhancements will probably be the rich techno geek minority... much like people the people who stood in line for the ever so pointless Ipad (no offense those who did nothing wrong with it) Those who take the genetic enhancements are going to be possibly an upper class of olmpians pretty much like in Gattaca Edited by dialforthedevil, Nov 25 2010, 02:29 PM.

People put metal though their nobs because they think it's cool. You think people won't want to become cyborgs? |

Exactly, there will be groups of people who stick themselves with cybernetics because it's cool just as there are people who stick themselves with piercings and ink because it's cool. I seriously doubt that replacing lost limbs is going to change humanity into a race of cyborgs anymore than the lost limbs of today have turned us into a race of peg legged pirates. Sure, there will be those who have a robotic hand or arm, or if they cannot afford a real one then an artificial heart, but they would be a minority. |

Well, bioengineering will probably eclipse ordinary mechanics as a means of producing good replacement organs pretty soon, so if I had to guess I'd say that people in the future will be hodgepodges of lab-grown limbs and organs. Actually, one thing I do see happening is the widespread implantation of electronics in the brain that allow us to connect to the internet mentally. We might also see electronic memory enhancements or whatever, since I'm pretty sure silicon can store more information per unit of volume than brain tissue. |
