| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! In 2002 cientes discover a asteroid call apophis that is very close to earth and some cientes thoughs that the asteroids may heat earth.Years of thoughts scientes thought that the asteroid will pass near earth and that it won't affect earth.By the year 2014 scientes watch that the asteroid is closing to earth in a large scale. The goberment try to plan to move the asteroid as far from earth as possible.By the year 2018 Nasa an the goverment begin there mision to move the asteroid by pushing it to chang it path. But the only thing it do was to slow down the asteroid,so by the year 2028 the goverment start to evacuate as many peoplepossible. But the asteroid was so slow own that it chang it path and crach to the moon.By altered is possition colosal earthquacks, hurrican, tornados, eruptions of volcanos and colosal tsunamis.By the year 2080 the effect of the moon got worse all lands start to turn into a great desert, turnin all lake and river in to colosal canyons.By the year 3700 earth start a new ice age and in the year 6000 the moon position is restore, then at the year 6200 the earth ice age end,the ice start to melt making river and lakes. At the year 6800 flora life start to grow, the oceans star to restore and humans and other animals get out of the underground facilitys.by the year 8000 earth life start to restore and the moon is shatered and it have a ring forme by the asteroid. now that I fisnish this I want your help wath species do you thing may have survive with humans and in the surfaces Edited by Dark-Matter, Nov 10 2010, 09:55 PM.

99942 Apophis isn't that strong (only 1/37-1/55 the size of KT). If it were to hit Chicago in 2029 the worst that could happen is that most people in USA and southern Canada die. If it were to hit the moon nothing would happen. In fact the moon takes most asteroids aimed to Earth, and nothing gets affected. And a lot are bigger than Apophis. Some eruption sizes: Hiroshima Nuke: 13 Kilotonnes TNT Nagaski: 21 Kilotonnes TNT Tunguska Event: 3-10 Megatonnes TNT Krakatoa Mega-Eruption: 200 Megatonnes TNT Apophis Possible Hit: 880 Megatonnes TNT KT Extinction Event: 100 Million Megatonnes TNT KT was ~ 113,636 times stronger than the possible Apophis hit. No way Apophis can cause a mass extinction. Some nuclear winters maybe, but not a mass extinction. |

so what size does an asteroid have to be to change the moon position but if the moon chage position It would be almost impossible for complex life to survive. The moon locks the Earth into a stable position WRT the sun. As a result the equator always faces a the sun and the poles have always been perpendicular. Planets that lack large moons wobble, and at times the poles face the sun and the equator rotates perpendicular to the sun. At those times the temperature and light extremes would exterminate all complex life forms Edited by Dark-Matter, Nov 10 2010, 08:50 PM.

I already knew that... No asteroid will be able to do what you described without wiping life on Earth. |

so what other thing may cause the moon to change position or brake without wiping all life on earth or something realative to my mass extintion but less extreme. Edited by Dark-Matter, Nov 10 2010, 09:36 PM.

I don't think anything can. Try something else. The moon won't work. |

Yeah, it's not really possible. Frankly, it would take something extremely large to destroy the moon. If the moon is destroyed, the Earth would go into an extremely erratic orbit. Eight hour days and a wild axial tilt, causing an extreme change in seasons. No life would be able to survive, save for bacteria. Plus, the only object large enough to cause such a change would be something the size of Ceres. Which would not be randomly wandering about the solar system. Anyway, a moon-involved extinction would wipe out all complex life on Earth. Don't listen to Orson Wells and his version of H.G. Wells's "A Time Machine". |
