| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! That just makes me wonder: Aside from Leedsicthys (which seems to have been more of a whale-shark analogue anyway), what WERE the baleen whale analogues in the Mesozoic? Surely creatures that big wouldn't escape the fossil record . . . |

Let me see: - Hupehsuchids (Triassic only; comtemporaneous of Henodus, but lived far away from the placodont's german lake in the far away land of China) - Pachycormids (aka Leedsichthys and pals) - Some random antartic plesiosaur that was a filter feeder - Stomatosuchid crocodiles (late Cretaceous only) - Ancestors of the megamouth shark |

I wish we could discover truly giant filter feeding reptiles or fish that lived in the mesozoic-like proper baleen whale size. |

On a related note, some plesiosaurs/pliosaurs/ichthyosaurs/sea crocs might have been doing what modern grey whales do: http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/12/giant_jurassic_sea_gutters.php |
