| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Blitzkrieging all the major cities at once is difficult, because there are just so many of them. There are 9 cities in the US with a population of over 1 million, and 34 with a population of over 500 thousand. The advanced state of military forces nowdays doesn't help when you're fighting the most advanced military. And it means even less when you are fighting an asymmetric war. If you think the radical islamic insurgents in the middle east are bad, you have not seen American insurgents. |

I know, that's why I'm so baffled by the thought of anyone trying to take a country that spans a continent. It wouldn't be like Europe, where you can capture a country, promise the neighbor you're not going to attack them, then make allies with them, it's going to be that no matter where you turn it's all going to be your enemy and it's all going to be united... Then again what with that EU (scoffscoffscoff). |

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

LoL, i think its hilarious how people still say stuff like 'america has the best military'. Remember Vietnam? by all the logic of that statement you should have won. truth is however, you lost, because in war its not the gun thats most important, its who's holding the gun. Morale and tactics, as well as individual initiative and chance, are more important than numbers and firepower (though both sides have to have weapons that can acually harm the opponent, eg both sides have to have guns from within the last two centuries). In a conventional war believe it or not, it matters the same. in WW2 for example, conventionally the Nazi troops had better weapons and armour than the Americans and Russians, but they still lost in a conventional war , due to the morale, tactics, logistics and the fact that many allied troops were more prepared to think for themselves rather than unquestionably obeying orders. |

No, seascorp. That was an asymmetric war, that is different... it can be compared to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Who is holding the gun" actually works in favour of the US... I mean, all those hardcore right-wing folks get all angsty against their fellow countrymen, so if someone was actually trying to invade their country... |

No country, except maybe China, could put a high enough force-to-space ratio to control the USA. Only ruthlessness and oppressive tactics wouild work, IMO. Or total destruction. ANTIMATTER BOMBS |

The Vietnam war was won in early 1968, the Viet Cong cleverly attacked during Tet when they hoped the fact that many people were celebrating would let them take over, and the South Vietnamese and allies utterly destroyed them as a military force, from then on the fighting was done by the Vietnamese People's Army. Had the American media done their job the North could have been forced to negotiation and we would have ended up with a situation much like Korea or Germany. And the Nazis lost because there are more Americans and Russians than there are Germans, and more American and Russian factories. |

You're gonna need a whole lot of antimatter to totally destroy the US... As for the situation in WWII, apparently it is Stalin who proclaimed, "quantity has a quality all its own". That sums up the German defeat pretty well; they had a lot of good technology, but it was costly, impractical, and often applied badly (or too late in the war). Edited by T.Neo, Nov 9 2010, 12:36 PM.

I'm fairly sure that's one of those famous quotes that was plain made up, like Yamamoto commenting on how American lawns are lousy with rifles. But it's correct. Arthur C. Clarke wrote a story from the perspective of a imprisoned high ranking general explaining how his nation was defeated because of its superior weaponry. They built ships that could go out of phase. but each time they did they got a little warped and soon parts were not interchangeable, while the victorious party concentrated on just building more and more ships. Hitler wasted a lot resources developing long range jet bombers when he should have focused on fighters to take down allied bombers. |

Sounds like bollacks to me. The closest thing to that is probably going to be the creation of something like the Franco-German Brigade for Eurocorps. Sounds like this is Sarkozy doing a U-turn. We both need new carriers, and originally the French were going to work with us so they would eventually have a modified Queen Elizabeth Class carrier. In 2008 shortie said non. Sounds like he had a change of heart. |

I dunno... I have a feeling some Soviet guy circa WWII came up with that, but I don't think it was Stalin himself. |

a good quote of stalin that is almost certainly propoganda is "i believe in one thing only, the power of human will" there's also this one "the death of one man is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic" though its not really propoganda |
