| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. What if the K-T extinction was science fiction? I want to create a world were raptors use tools and primitive weapons and where the tyrannosaurids have died out and Abeliasaurids have taken over. How can I make this possible?

The Trex's are dead. Unless I have them in the poles. |

SPEC is great, but why must be all this alternative mesozoic scenarios same?yea, maniraptors will indeed propably rule the palearctic and holoarctic, but 65 MY are long time to evolve NEW forms |

Seriously, I see the potential in this project and I think you shouldn't incourage him to rip-off spec. Spec has ideas also already used in other project, and although you should read it for advice don't rip-off spec too much. I suggest you should check out more recent and accurate projects here in this forum or on deviantart. For herbivores, I doubt that hardrosaurs will still be very cosmopolitan after they've had 65 million years of environmental change, I think maniraptorans, ceratopsians (actually I think they would be more omnivorous, but you coulds still have a few herbs) and descendents of basal ornithischians would be the major herbivores. And Sliv's right. 65MYA is a long time for dinos to produce new, interesting forms, and although it will be hard, you should not have mesozoic rip-offs of dinosaurs |

Since Tyrannosaurids descended from the feathered Dilong paradoxus I think they actually had protofeathers. The fully grown adults might lose them if they would have created too much heat, but I think if they lived near the poles they would keep the fluff. Like in African Elephants and Woolly Mammoths. |

About the raptors. Should they use spears , knives , clubs etc. How can they communicate. What do you guys reckon would be the most plausible ancestor. I want them to have evolved from Utahraptor but I think that might sound unlikely. What do you guys think? |

Utahraptor was long extinct before the Cretaceous ended. But some smaller Dromaeosaurs seemed to have had survived till 65 mya. If you want to have rather unusual "human-raptors", make them evolve from the Gondwanan Unenlagiines (long-snouted animals like Unenlagia or Austroraptor) instead of the usual Dromaeosaurines (robust animals like Dromaeosaurus or Utahraptor). |

Hmm why not some other species of sentient dinosaurs? Why is it always raptors..its rather cliche to be honest. Also UT it would be cool to see some pachycephlasaurs maybe them as the top herbivore instead of hadrosaurs? |

Yeah, although with the highest chance of being sapient, raptors are too cliched... ornithischian sapients would be damn cool!! How about hardrosaurs are extinct and marginocephalians are dominant herbivores? with just a few herbivorous maniraptorans.. for marine niches, you could have plesiosaurs dominating the oceans as apex predators, maybe some mosasaurs if you want? |

This is probably very implausible but would intelligent Pachycephlasaurs be alright? I think they're very cool. |
